Assignment No 1

This document contains an assignment with 3 questions about writing equations for vibrational systems. Question 1 asks to write the equation governing free vibration for systems with a single degree of freedom defined as vertical deflection under a weight. Question 2 asks to determine the natural frequency of a weighted spring suspended from the midpoint of a simply supported beam. Question 3 asks to write the equation of motion for a framed structure with a lumped mass and comment on the effect of base fixity by comparing it to another equation. The assignment addresses CLO2 and PLO2 regarding vibrational systems and their equations of motion.

1. Write the equation governing the free vibration of the systems shown in Figs. P1.9 to P1.11.
Assuming the beam to be massless, each system has a single DOF defined as the vertical
deflection under the weight w. The flexural rigidity of the beam is E I and the length is L.
[CLO2:C4:PLO2] (10)

2. Determine the natural frequency of a weight w suspended from a spring at the midpoint of a
simply supported beam (Fig. P1.12). The length of the beam is L, and its flexural rigidity is E
I. The spring stiffness is k. Assume the beam to be massless. [CLO2:C4:PLO2] (10)
3. Write the equation of motion for the frame shown in Fig. P1.13. The flexural rigidity of the
beam and columns is as noted. The mass lumped at the beam is m; otherwise, assume the frame
to be massless and neglect damping. By comparing the result with Eq. (1.3.2), comment on the
effect of base fixity. [CLO2:C4:PLO2] (10)
