This morning we will read a poem, “The Seven

Ages of Man” from the comedy “As You Like It”
by William Shakespeare. Are you ready class?

The Seven Ages of Man

All the world’s a stage,

And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts

His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,

Mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms.
And then the whining school-boy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,

Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad

Made to his mistress’ eyebrow. Then a Soldier,
Full of strange oaths, and bearded like a pard,
Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon’s mouth. And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe, and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts

Into the lean and slippered pantaloons,

With spectacles on nose, and pouch on side;
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes

And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,

That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness, and mere oblivion,—
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.

A. Analysis (Process)
Processing Questions
1. What comprises the seven ages
of man or stages in life of man
according to the poem? The seven ages of man
comprises the infant,
whining schoolboy,
emotional lover, devoted
soldier, wise judge,
clueless old man, and
corpse.

2. What is compared to the “stage”

in the first two lines? How are the
two related? The world is compared to
the stage. It is said in the
second line "where men
and women are merely
players." It states that the
men and women in the
stage (world) are playing
different roles in life that
they need to fulfill.
3. Based on the comparison what figure
of speech is used by the author? The figure of speech used
is Metaphor.
4. In the last line of the poem, the word
“sans” is repeated. What do you think
is the purpose of repeating it four times? The word "sans" means
"without" this just
emphasizes the incapacity
of the last stage of men in
the poem.
5. Based on the repetition on the word
SANS. What figures of speech is used by
the author? The figure of speech used
by the author is Repetition.

Very good class! You did a great job.

All your answers were correct.

B. Abstraction (Process)

Our new lesson today is about is a word

or phrase that has a meaning something
different than its literal meaning,
called figures of speech.

Figures of Speech

A figure of speech expresses an idea, thought, or image with words which carry
meanings beyond their literal ones. Figures of speech give extra dimension to
language by stimulating the imagination and evoking visual, sensual imagery;
such language paints a mental picture in words. Some types of figurative
language are the following:

1. Simile: a direct comparison of two things, usually employing the words

like or as.
Example: “My heart is like an apple tree whose boughs are bent
with thickest fruit.”
Examples from the poem: “Sighing like furnace”
“creeping like snail”
“bearded like a pard”
2. Metaphor: a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an
object or action to
which it is not literally applicable.
Example: “Her voice is music to his ears.”
Examples from the poem: “All the world’s a stage”
“And all men and women are merely players”
“seeking the bubble reputation”

3. Alliteration: the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of the

words
Example: “doubting, dearing, dreams, no mortal”
Examples from the poem: “shrunk shank”
“plays his part”
“a world too wide”

4. Personification: is a figure of speech in which a thing, an idea or an

animal is given human attributes. The non-human objects are portrayed in such a
way that we feel they have the ability to act like human beings.
Example: “The first rays of morning tiptoed through the meadow.”
Example from the poem: “Sighing like furnace”
“Even in the cannon’s mouth.”
5. Repetition: It is a figure of speech the same word or words are repeated
in a line. That gives a melodious effect.
Example: “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of
the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the
time.”
Example from the poem: “Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans
everything.”

C. Application
1. Valuing
In your experience, in what stage
in the poem do you belong? Why? I think….

Being in that stage, what are the

roles that you perform? I think…

Is the message of the poem

worthwhile? Prove your point. Yes, because in seven ages of
man you can learn about your
roles in life in that poem you can
realize that the life is like a stage
play. we as a human we are the
actor and the actress in the stage
play and the entrance of the actor
and actress in stage play is when
we born and if the stage play
were going to end or exit that
means we already die.
