 Washburn Guitars A Chicago Original Since 1883

After the Great Fire of 1871, Chicago quickly became a national center for
musical instrument manufacturing. Steeped in the tradition of fine instrument
making, Washburn Guitar’s dynamic 125 year history began in Chicago in 1883.
The original guitar factory was located just blocks away from Maxwell Street.

In the early 1920’s, Maxwell Street itself would emerge as the epicenter of a
musical movement. Often considered the first entry point for thousands of
African-Americans arriving from the Mississippi Delta, Maxwell Street became
a hotbed for Delta Blues in its most raw and dramatic form. Newcomers
and established musicians alike would listen and jam with one another in an
atmosphere void of commercial influence. Once recorded, this powerful,
emotional style of music would not only become the dominant form of blues
but would radically change the emerging sound of Rock & Roll.

There, on Maxwell Street, as well as in alleyways, city sidewalks, bars and

honky-tonks around the country, Washburn Guitars were embraced as the very
embodiment and reflective spirit of the hard working musicians who played
them as well as the employees who designed and crafted them. It is that same
spirit that guides Washburn to this day.

George Lynch is one of the most recognizable names in the world of guitar. With a
BAck Mahogany career spanning more than thirty years, George has recorded more than twenty
Sides Mahogany albums, toured the entire globe many times, and is the one of the most recognizable
Neck Mahogany endorsees of the world’s finest guitars and equipment.
Fretboard Rosewood We worked with Lynch to create “The Outlaw,” an acoustic guitar that recognizes
Binding Multi-Lam his continuing contributions to the world of music and conforms to his personal
Bridge Rosewood specifications. We started with a finely crafted, Solid Spruce Jumbo guitar and added
a unique, custom neck shape made from Mahogany and built specifically for Lynch.

We then incorporated diamondback inlays, aged Grover® tuners and B-Band® A15
Electronics B-Band® A15
electronics. We finished the guitar with spectacular graphics designed by renowned

Richie Owens was brought up in a bluegrass family and began playing Dobro when he was just a
BAck Solid Flamed Maple boy. By the time he was in his teens, he was building and fixing his own instruments. Today, Richie
Sides Solid Flamed Maple designs, builds or repairs instruments for the likes of Nils Lofgren, Ron Wood and The Dixie Chicks. He
Neck Flamed Maple recently was on tour with Dolly Parton as a featured performer, playing mandolin on her “Vintage
Tour”. Richie collaborated with Washburn in developing their new M-120 Mandolin.

Banjo virtuoso Sonny Smith was the winner of the 1998 National Banjo Championship. He now brings his banjo
RIM Maple and fiddle playing and performing prowess to Tennessee, where he performs full time in the Smoky Mountain
Tone Ring Bell Brass Stringband at Dollywood by day and in the Smoky Mountain Jubilee at night.
Head Remo® For the B160, Washburn collaborated with Smith who was eager to discuss the ideas he had implemented in this
Neck Flamed Maple instrument. “Back in the day, banjos were mainly played by women. As a result, the instrument developed with
Fretboard Rosewood a very narrow fretboard. We’ve given this instrument a wider fretboard to accommodate bigger fingers. We’ve
Tuners Planetary also moved the 5th string nut between the 5th and 6th fret for improved tone, sustain and intonation. We
redesigned the headstock so that it’s a bit smaller than the ones found on modern banjos, fully bound it and

Nuno Bettencourt
Nuno Bettencourt, born in Portugal and raised in
Boston, Massachusetts, grew up in a very musical
family. In his teenage years he began playing
drums, bass and keyboards, but ultimately settled
on guitar as his primary instrument. Since then he
has become one of the world’s greatest guitarists,
who draws from an eclectic variety of styles and
influences and is a tremendously technical and
adept player, with an acute sense of rhythm. Most
famous for his role in Boston-area group Extreme,
in which Bettencourt recorded five CDs and
delivered the hits “More Than Words” and “Hole
Hearted”, he has also released a solo CD, formed
the groups Mourning Widows and Population 1
(which eventually became DramaGods), and was
featured in Satellite Party (formed by Perry Farrell).
Although they had disbanded in 1995, in 2007,
Extreme reunited and headlined the Washburn’s
125th Anniversary Party at Winter NAMM 2008.
Extreme released their latest CD, Saudades
de Rock later that year and are currently on a
worldwide tour to support the release.

In order to develop the N Series with Washburn,

Bettencourt utilized his extensive knowledge of
the guitar and designed each model with an
extremely fast neck that allows for easy access
to higher frets via the Stephen’s® Extended
Cutaway. A Duncan® ‘59 & a Lawrence® L-500 in
the bridge make this reverse headstock marvel
wail. These super road axes are the gateway to
total creativity, just ask Nuno and the thousands of
musicians that play them.

Nick Catanese
Hailing from the Pittsburgh, PA, Nick Catanese
is famed Black Label Society’s rhythm guitarist.
Cantanese’s unique ability to double Wylde’s
rippingly intense solos live and mimic them in
the studio earned Catanese the “Evil Twin”
handle from Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde
himself. Catanese started playing guitar at the
age of twelve and hasn’t stopped since. Wylde
personally asked Catanese to join his very “non-
acoustical” project, Black Label Society in 1999
and since then, they have toured the globe
together, playing to sold-out crowds worldwide.
He continues to show off his shredding ability in
his new project, Speed X, which he has recently
formed with Queensryche guitarist Mike Stone.
Speed X’s debut CD is scheduled to be released
in 2009.

Washburn developed the Catanese Series, which

includes Idols and a V, under the direction of
Catanese himself. All of the guitars in the series
incorporate “the phattest neck known to man,”
which was built specifically to meet Catanese’s
needs. The premium USA Custom Shop Catanese
Idol boasts a red signature ETinlay at the 12th fret
and custom oval skull headstock inlay, while the V
features the Evil Twin logo at the 12th fret.
