Office hours: Students are welcome to stop by the classroom before or after class.
In the event I am not there or I am unavailable, an appointment may be arranged.
Email or a note in my mailbox is always welcomed
I. Methods of Instruction:
After a brief evaluation of student knowledge via prior experience in language study, students
will begin their study of the Spanish language and culture via the four basic skills:
listening, speaking, reading and writing. The classroom activities will be conducted in the target
language and students are expected to produce language. Group work and partner activities are
an essential part of the class as this provides opportunities for students to speak to each other in
Spanish. Also, it is essential that you learn to use the iLRN site that accompanies your textbook.
It is an important part of the textbook package. Please sign into
our iLRN class page ASAP! We will also be using our textbook the first day of class.
This class requires technology access: this is the only way to complete your online assignments
and assessments, access study tools, media and more. Although blackboard is not used all of the
time, many homework assignments, bluebook questions, projects and handouts will be posted
on blackboard.
II. Blackboard:
Students must obtain a Rowan username and password to access Blackboard
(https://rowan.blackboard.com). Students may obtain their passwords and usernames by going
to the Technology Help Desk of Memorial Hall.
Students who are observed using (or texting on) their cell phones during instructional time will
automatically receive a lower participation grade for that class. The use of such equipment
distracts the professor as well as the other students in the class and hinders the offending
student’s possible engagement in the class activities and conversation.
In addition to receiving lower participation grades due to disruptive behavior, disruptive
students may be warned that such behavior is unacceptable and, if such behavior continues,
may result in the students being directed to leave the classroom.
Students will receive no penalty for excused absences (for example when a doctor’s note is
given to the professor by a sick student or in the case of other extraordinary circumstances).
Students who arrive late or leave early from a class session will receive a lower participation
grade for that class unless the late arrival/early departure is excused.
b. Written work/ iLrn Activities / Homework (15%): ALL students are required to use the iLrn site
that accompanies the textbook. Students must check the iLrn site weekly to see what assignments are
due. All activities assigned are due by the posted due date. Students will receive a grade for each
chapter based on the completeness of these iLrn assignments. The instructor will check or collect
homework assignments at her discretion. Late assignments will not be collected or checked by the
instructor and students will receive a zero for those particular assignments.
Student Responsibilities:
· Thoroughly read this syllabus and fully understand the information presented.
· Attend classes regularly. Makeup tests will not be given without a legitimate Doctor’s
Note
or a letter from the Dean of Students/Head Coach. IF YOU ARE HABITUALLY LATE OR
ABSENT, THIS IS NOT THE CLASS FOR YOU!!
· In case of absences, find out what material was missed and study it. Exchange email
addresses/phone numbers with someone in the class who will keep you abreast of class
activities/paperwork in the event you must be absent.
· Complete all homework and assignments on time. This is an important learning tool for
you. Do not copy other student’s work and submit it to me as your own. Both students
will receive a zero for copied work.
· Study course material a minimum of four hours per week outside of class or in the lab.
FINAL DATES:
The class will be divided into 3 groups. Each group will be assigned specific dates for
oral presentations. The presentations will be performed individually. The group is for
scheduling purposes only. These presentations will take place during the first 10
minutes of class. There are no makeups if you are late or absent on your scheduled
day. This presentation will count as an oral quiz grade.
Each presentation will consist of at least 5 sentences utilizing the vocabulary and the
topic from the lesson. No notes may be used.
