Sam is reading a travel magazine about a museum in Paris, France called the Louvre. It says parts of
the Louvre are almost a thousand years old! The king of France built a castle in Paris in 1190. Later,
another king built a palace in the same place, using some of the old castle walls. For many years, kings
and queens lived in the palace and added more buildings and rooms, but, in 1674, King Louis XIV built
a new palace. He wanted to live outside Paris. In 1692, he began to use the Louvre as a place to show
his ancient statues instead of a place to live. Now, it’s a very famous art museum. There are paintings
and statues from many countries. The magazine says that the museum is open every day. Sam wants to
visit the Louvre’s website to learn more about the artwork in the museum.

year he paints, but this year he made a sculpture instead. In the photo I took, he is holding a statue of
a man. He said it was his father. I took another photo of a girl named Mary. In the photo, she is holding
a beautiful painting of a purple flower. It was the teacher’s favorite painting. I tried to draw my brother,
but I can’t draw faces very well, so I took photos instead. I took a photo of the teacher’s dog and lots of

How are you? How was your vacation? Mine was good. Last week, it was my mother’s birthday, and we
went to a very nice restaurant. All the waiters were wearing dress shirts and black suits, and they had a
white napkin over their arm. Our waiter gave us the menu, and I couldn’t believe it. The prices were so
high! I wanted to order beef, but they didn’t have any, so I had pasta instead. My mother ate some fish,
and my father ordered the lamb with mushroom sauce. My brother had the lamb, too, but he ordered it
without the sauce. Everything tasted very good! Then my father said he was ready for the bill. But first,
the waiter brought my mother a slice of chocolate cake from their bakery. He got a big tip!

Thank you for asking the students to give you ideas to make our school better. My students have many
ideas to improve the outside of the school building. For example, there is a space behind the building,
far from the street, that they think would be perfect for a big garden. Only grass grows there now, but
we could plant fruit trees. Students could also plant vegetable gardens each year to learn how plants
grow and how we get food. Also, they think some flowers would look good in front of the building. They
would like to plant yellow and purple flowers around the front door, the same as our school colors. This
would make a very colorful welcome for visitors to our school. My students have ideas for inside, too,
like paintings in the lobby and hallways. We would like to present our ideas to you on Monday, if you’re
free. Please e-mail me soon and tell me what time would be good. We can show you a map of where we
think the plants should go, and we have other drawings, too.

Hi there! We’re here in China now and getting ready to explore a big cave. It’s really dark, so we’re

to lose the other ones! Our friend went to get a rope from his car. Once he arrives, we’ll climb into the
cave. We’re going to study a small plant in the cave. It’s very interesting because it does not need light
to grow. You can find it in many different places here, but this cave has a big one. We hope to learn
more about it. Do you remember Jennifer, the photographer from the science museum? She’s traveling
with us so she can take photos. I will e-mail one to you when I get back to the hotel.

When I was young, I loved cats. I would go visit my friends, and we’d play games and watch TV. My
friends all had pets. It was fun, but there was a bad part, too. I would sneeze and get a bad rash at their
houses.
One day, I was at my best friend’s house, and I started sneezing. My skin got swollen and red. I sneezed
so loudly that my friend’s cat ran out of the room. I was worried because I thought I had scared the cat,
but, as soon as the cat left, I suddenly stopped sneezing.
My friend looked at me and laughed. I asked him, “What are you laughing about? It’s not funny to scare
the cat!”
He laughed harder, “William, I can’t believe it! All these times you’ve been coming to my house you sit
with my cat the whole time. And guess what?”
“What?” I asked.
I thought a second and said, “You’re right! All of you have cats!”
