In the C60/C70 DADF, the paper was mechanically

deskewed by the Registration Rollers.

The Pre-registration Roller drives the paper until the leading

edge (corner) makes contact with the Registration Roller,
which is not yet turning.

The Pre-registration Roller continues to drive the document

into the Registration Roller, causing it to buckle until the
entire leading edge is in contact with the Registration Roller
(deskewed).

Once the edge is deskewed, the Registration Roller drives

the document forward into the scanning paper path.

Paper Path Jams Paper Path Jams

Sensors (represented by the small blue triangles)
throughout the paper path tell the Main Control Unit (MCU)
when the paper arrives and leaves key locations in the
path.

If the paper does not arrive at a location, the sensors detect

the error and the information is sent to the MCU. If the
paper arrives at a location, and the sensor stays triggered
too long, the MCU determines that the paper is jammed at
the location.

There are three major areas of paper jams.

Simple Image Quality Adjustment (SIQA) Simple Image Quality Adjustment (SIQA)
This module provides information and image quality
procedures using the SIQA process.

Image Transfer Adjustment Image Transfer Adjustment

SIQA is used to create profiles for paper trays and paper

types using the Automatic Alignment Adjustment. SIQA is
also used to:
• Adjust Image Transfer
• Adjust Density Uniformity
This lesson covers these procedures.

The SIQA Adjust Image Transfer is used to create

adjustments for ink coverage and different types of paper.
Adjusting Image Transfer changes the bias on the IBT belt
transfer rollers, the Transfer Roller, and the Fuser to make
the image transfer evenly across all paper types and
weights.

Automatic adjustments can be also be manually adjusted.

Image Transfer Adjustment Video Image Transfer Adjustment Video

Watch Video Watch Video

The Image Transfer Adjustment video was developed for

the Versant 80 Press. The same procedures are used with
the PrimeLink C9065/C9070.

Density Uniformity Adjustment Density Uniformity Adjustment

The Density Uniformity Adjustment measures CMYK

density values from 20% to 100% across the width and
length of the paper.

Once the Density Uniformity Adjustment is applied, the

image processor sends the scanned data to the ESS PWB,
which compares it to the standards for each of the images.

The ESS PWB adjusts the biases, using the Automatic

Density Control to create a consistent density throughout
the image.

Troubleshoot Image Quality Problems Troubleshoot Image Quality Problems

This module provides information used to troubleshoot
image quality defects.

Troubleshoot Image Quality Troubleshoot Image Quality

Troubleshooting Image defects are classified into two

categories:
• One-color Defects
• Four-color Defects
Each color section is responsible for generating one color
image and transferring the image to the Transfer (IBT) Belt.
One-color defects are usually caused by the components at
the top or above the IBT, such as: (Click each highlighted
item to view the component.)
• First Bias Transfer Rolls (1st BTR Roll)
• Drum Cartridges
• Developers
• ROS (Laser)
• Toner System
Four-color image defects are usually caused by
components after the black Imaging Drum and below the
Transfer (IBT) Belt. This area is where all four colors are on
the IBT and are transferred to the media at the same time.
Troubleshoot White Stripes in One Color Troubleshoot White Stripes in One Color

White stripes in one color are typically caused when

something blocks the development of a color image, or
drags it off of an imaging component.

If only one color has a white stripe, look for something in

the imaging components of that color. For instance, look
for:
• Debris blocking the ROS window
• Debris rubbing on the Imaging Drum or Developer
Roller

If the void area appears on the Magenta Drum Cartridge,

check the Developer Roller. If the void also appears on the
Developer Roller, look for something dragging on the
Developer Roller. If the void appears only on the Drum
Cartridge, check the ROS window before changing the
Drum Cartridge.

Troubleshoot White Stripes in All Colors Troubleshoot White Stripes in All Colors

White stripes that run through all of the colors usually

indicates that a scrap of paper or debris is dragging the
color off the IBT or the media before it is fused.

In many cases, the toner will be smeared along the white

stripe in the print.

Look for debris dragging along the IBT or in the area of the
Vacuum Transport Belt just before the Fuser.

Troubleshoot Mottled Prints Troubleshoot Mottled Prints

Toner transfers to different paper according to image
content and paper thickness. The Image Transfer
Adjustment is used to create profiles for the different types
of paper.
The SIQA process for Adjusting Image Transfer changes
the bias on the IBT belt transfer rollers, the Transfer Roller,
and the Fuser to make the image transfer evenly across all
media types and thickness.

Troubleshoot Repeating Defects Troubleshoot Repeating Defects

Repeating Defects are marks or deletions along the slow

scan direction of the print image. They may appear in one
or all colors.

Repeating Defects are caused by rollers in the Imaging

process of the print.

To find which of the components is causing the Repeating

Defects, use the Image Quality Defect Measurement Tool
for the PrimeLink C9065/C9070 Printer.

Fold the print with the repeating defects, and then measure
the distance between the defects against the measurement
lines on the Image Quality Defect Measurement Tool.

Click the button to see the Image Quality Defect

Measurement Tool.

Measurement Tool Measurement Tool

Troubleshoot Repeating Spots or Smudges Troubleshoot Repeating Spots or Smudges

Spots and smudges are usually caused by contamination
inside the paper path. Contamination can be caused by
glue from labels or envelopes, paper clips, paper debris,
and other foreign matter.

In the image, the spots are repeated at regular intervals

down the page. This is typical of foreign matter or toner
stuck to one of the rollers in the paper path.

If the spots appear in paper fed from one tray, look on the
feed rollers for that tray.

If the spots appear on all prints from all trays, look for
damage or debris on rollers common to the whole paper
path.

To clear the problem, make 10 blank copies. If the prints

improve, repeat the process until the spots disappear.

Troubleshoot Random Spots, Smudges, or Streaks Troubleshoot Random Spots, Smudges, or Streaks

Random spots or smudges are caused by toner, or other

contamination, dropping onto the IBT or media. Streaks are
usually caused by something dragging through or dropping
onto the toner before the Finisher.

To troubleshoot, print a Tabloid or larger size paper from

the Bypass Tray. As soon as the trailing edge of the paper
enters the printer, open the Front Cover. This will cause a
paper jam.

Pull the Transfer Module out to clear the jam. Look for spots
or smudges on the paper to the left of the Transfer Roller. If
there are spots or smudges, the contamination is falling on
the media before it goes to the IBT.

Spots or smudges that appear after the transfer are coming

from the imaging components, the IBT, or the Fuser.

Color Calibration Color Calibration

This module provides information and training on the Color
Registration Control (RegiCon) of the PrimeLink
C9065/C9070 Color Printer.

Color Registration Control (RegiCon) Color Registration Control (RegiCon)

RegiCon is the automatic process which the PrimeLink

C9065/C9070 checks, and then corrects the color-to-color
registration of the Image Output Terminal (IOT). RegiCon
makes corrections for colors that might be shifted due to
new components, vibration, aging components, or removal
and installation of components.

RegiCon runs automatically when:

Temperature level changed significantly since the last

RegiCon

8 hours have lapsed since the last RegiCon, and the power
is turned on

Marking module is removed and replaced

New Fuser is replaced

HFSI component is replaced

Printer switches to the User mode after NVM initialization

IBT belt speed is adjusted

RegiCon runs with Diagnostics during:

Setup cycle

Registration measurement cycle

Sensor check cycle

RegiCon Process: Mark on Belt RegiCon Process: Mark on Belt

An internally generated test pattern called the Color Shift

Detection Image Pattern (chevron pattern) is created on the
IN, CENTER, and OUT positions on the IBT belt.

Cyan is the reference color to which all of the others are

compared and measured.

RegiCon Process: Measurement and Feedback RegiCon Process: Measurement and Feedback

The Mark On Belt (MOB) Sensors read the positions of the

chevrons on the IBT at the IN, CENTER, and OUT
positions. The information is fed back to the Image Control
Processor.

RegiCon Process: Adjustment RegiCon Process: Adjustment

The Image Control Processor determines the exact location
of each of the chevrons, and then calculates the errors. It
provides a correction offset to the image data to the ROS
(Lasers) to keep the marks aligned. The processor
remembers the offset and applies it to each of the color
images until the next RegiCon is run.

Self-check Self-check
Read the instructions and answer each self-check question.

Question 1 Question 1

A customer calls and explains that he has a problem with a

repeating band in the color prints. After running a series of
test prints, the bands only appear in the magenta test
prints. Which of the following is the most likely cause?

Magenta Drum Cartridge

Intermediate Belt Transfer

Transfer Roller

Fuser

That is incorrect. Since all other colors except magenta

print correctly, the repeating bands are probably caused by
the Magenta Drum Cartridge.

That is correct. Since all other colors except magenta print

correctly, the repeating bands are probably caused by the
Magenta Drum Cartridge.

Question 2 Question 2

The customer explains that the prints have variations in ink

coverage and look mottled across the entire page. She is
using a heavier 256 gsm paper. Which adjustment would
you recommend the customer use to improve the print
quality?

SIQA Automatic Alignment Adjustment

SIQA Density Uniformity Adjustment

SIQA Image Transfer Adjustment

RegiCon Adjustment

That is incorrect. Since the density is light across the entire

page, the customer should run the SIQA Image Transfer
Adjustment.

That is correct. Since the density is light across the entire

page, the customer should run the SIQA Image Transfer
Adjustment.

Question 3 Question 3

The customer complains of a white stripe that appears

through all colors? Which of the following is the likely
cause?
Debris dragging on the surface of the black Drum Cartridge

Debris on surface of the Pre-registration Roller

A piece of paper dragging against the surface of the IBT

(Transfer Belt)

Debris stuck to the surface of the Fuser pressure belt

That is incorrect. Four-color image defects are usually

caused by components after the black Imaging Drum and
below the Transfer Belt. This is where all four colors are
transferred to the media at the same time. Since the white
stripe runs through all four colors, the defect is cause after
all four colors accumulate on the IBT.

That is correct. Four-color image defects are usually

caused by components after the black Imaging Drum and
below the Transfer Belt. This is where all four colors are
transferred to the media at the same time. Since the white
