3. Questions
Read the case study below, and answer the questions that follow.

The Cleaning Crew is a cleaning company that outsources its services to businesses, schools
and private households that require a range of cleaning services. These services include
domestic workers, car washers, window cleaners, and more. John Xaba is an employee of
The Cleaning Crew, and has been working as a window cleaner for the past five weeks.
However, due to the working conditions the window cleaners have been subjected to over
the past couple of weeks, he has put in a request to management to start working as a car
washer. This is because of the following factors. Two weeks ago new cleaning equipment
was introduced, but due to recent changes within the company, the window cleaners have
not been given adequate training on how to use this new equipment. Additionally, the
harnesses and ropes used when cleaning high-rise buildings have become seriously worn
over time, and are no longer suitable for the task.

Needless to say, this has only worked to frustrate John and his co-workers, as they do not
feel that their safety is being prioritised or taken into account at all. In addition to this, the
newly introduced changes were not discussed with the workers who would be directly
affected. A risk assessment and inspection were done to ensure the new equipment and
procedures are legally compliant, but management has not taken the necessary action to
keep their employees informed of these developments. The current equipment has not been
inspected (or replaced), despite workers having brought this need to their attention.

Within a week of John’s transfer request, he was put through the necessary induction (and
supplementary) training process to become a car washer, and has officially assumed his new
position under the constant supervision of the head of car washing, Mr Overbeek. Since his
transfer, John has felt much safer, happier and more motivated to come into work.
