SPELLING BEE

so some of you yang pernah ikutan spelling bee introduction di hos waktu itu probably have heard
of spelling bee. But for those who didn't, here's a short explanation of what spelling bee is. So
spelling bee is a form of competition where two contestants from opposing teams try to spell a
word that is given to them by the judges.

 the contestants will take turns to figure out how the word they were given is spelled. each
turn lasts one minute, or 60 seconds. when one contestant fails to spell the word correctly,
or runs out of time, the turn goes to the contestant from the opposing team. At each turn, a
contestant may ask the judge to repeat the word (because the word if spoken, not written),
or for the definition of the word, or how it is used in a sentence

 when answering and spelling out a word, there are no takebacks! so if you already started
spelling out the letters to a word, you cannot go back or change your mind about it . which is
why in spelling bee it's important to fully form your answer before trying to spell a word.
Example : also you may notice that there may be several ways to spell a word, i.e. "colour"
vs "color", or "realize" vs "realise" this is because "british" english and "american" english
spell words differently, and what dictionary and accepted spelling is used in a competition
will be affected by that. Though usually in indonesia and SE asia british english is the
standard, so if you enter a spelling bee competition they will probably be using an oxford
dictionary

 Memorizing is one technique that you can use to expand your vocabulary and prepare you
for spelling bee, but memorizing shouldn't be the only technique you rely on to prepare for a
spelling bee competition, because sometimes, the words chosen in a spelling bee
competition are words that aren't commonly listed in dictionaries, such as foreign language
loanwords, or words that defy the regular english spelling conventions

 learning the language roots of a word can really help you understand how a loanword is
spelled, because often times the way they are spelled would correspond to the spelling
conventions of the language it came from

 the rules of spelling bee varies from competition to competition, country to country. I may
have said that one turn of spelling bee lasts 1 minute during our last upgrading, but as the
video has shown, some spelling bee competitions may allow you more than 1 minute per
turn

 There are some things that can help you "guess" how certain words in english are spelled (in
case you don't have them memorized yet)

 so, as we all know, english is really a mish mash of different languages that's been put in a
blender, beaten with a stick, and flushed down the sink. you've got words that are clearly
absorbed from french, you've got german words that's been there since the middle ages,
and ofc more words are being adopted into the english language even today. and, since
these words come from different languages, usually the spelling conventions of the
languages they come from are preserved. so for example, you could guess that words that
end with an "uhns" sound, like "existence", "sentence", etc., come from french. French itself
has its roots in latin, and latin is a very "compounded"(? idk the proper term lol) language
where you can take apart each word and roughly figure out what they mean.

 so for example, "existence", being a loanword of latin roots, can be taken apart to become
"exist" and "-ence", with "exist" obvi meaning "to be, real, nyata, etc." and "-ence" being a
suffix or kata imbuhan to make the verb "exist" into a noun. now why would learning about
the language roots of certain words help in spelling bee? because, one of the things you may
ask the judge is what language a word has its roots in .For example, you can ask a judge
what the language roots of "schadenfreude" is, which is german, and that would probably
help you a little in reminding or even guessing how it would be spelled with a germanic
spelling system
