(The student prays.)
2. Customary Greetings
Good morning class.
Good morning ma’am.
Before you take your seats, see to it that
your chairs are properly aligned and are
free from any destructions.
3. Checking of Attendance
Attendance officer, kindly check the
attendance of the class.
(The attendance officer checks the attendance of the class.)
B. REVIEW OF THE PAST LESSON
Last meeting, we discussed about the categories
of a tropical cyclone.
What are the categories of a tropical cyclone?
Yes ___________.
Maximum Wind Speed
Category kilometers per hour
(kph)
Tropical Depression 64
Tropical Storm 118
Typhoon 200
Super typhoon greater than 200

When do we used the term typhoon?

When the maximum wind speed is 200 kph and the term
typhoon is only used in the north western part of the pacific
ocean.
Very good!
It seems that you really understood our topic
yesterday.
C. MOTIVATION
Before we start our lesson, let’s play the game
entitled “ARRANGE ME”.
I am going to group you into four. Each group
will be given flashcard and chalk where you
will write your answer. I have here on the
screen set of jumbled letters. All you have to do
is to arrange the letters correctly to reveal the
magic word which will be our topic for this day.

Are there any questions with regards to our

mechanics?
None ma’am.
Okay so let’s start playing.
(The students start playing the game.)
D. PRESENTATION OF THE LESSON
Combining the words, you have unlocked on
our activity, what is our topic for this day?
Plotting the Philippine Area of Responsibility and Tracking
a Tropical Cyclone ma’am.
Exactly!
Today we are going to plot the Philippine Area
of Responsibility and to track the path of a
tropical cyclone.

You will also identify the boundaries of the

Philippine Area of Responsibility, plot the
scope of the PAR using its latitude and
longitude points, track the path of a tropical
cyclone as it enters and leaves the PAR and
give safety measures before, during and after a
tropical cyclone.

But before we proceed to our discussion, there

are two essential questions that will serve as
your guide in our lesson.

Kindly read the essential questions Janine.

1. What is the essence of knowing the Philippine Area
of Responsibility?
2. Why is it important to regularly monitor a tropical
cyclone that is within the PAR?
E. DISCUSSION
In what events or phenomena have you heard
the words Philippine Area of Responsibility?
I heard the word Philippine Area of Responsibility on the
television during a weather forecast ma’am.

I heard the word Philippine area of responsibility during

typhoon updates ma’am.
Exactly! We hear this word mostly during
weather updates.
For you class, what does the words Philippine
Area of Responsibility connotes?
Philippine Area of Responsibility is the region where
PAGASA is assigned to it as its tropical warning cyclone
area or “an area of responsibility”.
Nice idea.
Do you know the scope and boundaries of the
Philippine Area of Responsibility?
No ma’am.
For us to determine the boundaries, we are
going to plot the Philippine Area of
Responsibility using its latitude and longitude
points.

But before that, let us differentiate latitude and

longitude.
What is latitude? Please read, _____________. Latitude is an imaginary line that circles the Earth in parallel
with the equator. Its distance is measured in degrees North
or South from the equator.

What about longitude? Kindly read, ________. Longitude is the distance measured in degrees East or West
from an imaginary line that goes from the North pole to the
South pole.

I have here on the screen the different points of

latitudes and longitudes of the boundaries of the
Philippine Area of Responsibility.
Kindly read the points Justine.
Points Latitude, Longitude
a. 5°N, 115°E
No the typhoon is outside the PAR ma’am.
b. 15°N, 115°E
c. 21°N, 120°E
No the typhoon is still outside the PAR ma’am.
d. 25°N, 120°E
e. 25°N, 135°E The points which are located at latitudes less than 5 ° N and
longitudes more than 135° E will lie outside the Philippine
f. 5°N, 135°E Area of Responsibility.

Using the points of latitudes and longitudes of

the Philippine Area of Responsibility, if the
typhoon is located at 15° N, 138° E, is it within
the PAR?

How about if the typhoon is at 19° N, 117° E. is

it inside the PAR?

Which points are not within the PAR? Most tropical cyclones that hit the country come from the
Pacific Ocean. The wide area gives us more time to prepare
before the tropical cyclone hits the land.

Okay, very good observation.

Class, take a look at the Philippine Area of

Responsibility.
What do you think is the reason why the eastern
part is wider? You can relate your answer with BREAKING NEWS:

: Ompong left the PAR on September 16, 2018 at 2:00 P.M.

: Ompong moved in westward direction.

Where did Ompong form?

When did Ompong enter the PAR?

When did Ompong leave the PAR?

In what direction did Ompong move?

Very good observations class.

F. GENERALIZATION
Now, let us go back with the two essential
questions.

What is the essence of knowing the Philippine

Area of Responsibility?
: The essence of knowing the Philippine Area of
Responsibility is for us to know if a tropical cyclone has
entered our vicinity so that we could be able to prepare.
Why is it important to regularly monitor a
tropical cyclone that is within the PAR?
: It is important to regularly monitor a tropical cyclone that
is within the PAR for us to be able to identify where the
Tropical cyclone is going to and for us to be able to make
necessary safety precautions.
G. APPLICATION
What will you do if you have heard over the
radio or watched through the television that
there is a tropical cyclone that has entered the
Philippine Area of Responsibility and the
forecasted track of the cyclone is towards your
location?
: I will inform my family and friends about the news and get
updated with further news about the cyclone.
: I will prepare for my emergency kit. This will include
ready to eat foods, flashlight, radio, water and first aid kit.
: I will move to the nearest evacuation center.
: I will move to higher place in case of flood.
Very good!
What other things are you going to do?
: I should not panic.
: I will stay inside the house.
: I will listen for more weather updates.
: I should stay out of open wires.
: I will help my family and other people to fix the things that
are affected by the cyclone.
: I will listen to further weather updates.
: I should stay away from flooded areas to avoid accidents.

H. EVALUATION
Okay class, this time you are going to present
weather forecasting. Each group will report an
incoming tropical cyclone and forecast its track
until it leaves the Philippine Area of
Responsibility. Specify the latitude and
longitude points of the cyclone at a given day
and time. Use the map on the screen to illustrate
the path of the cyclone. Provide also some
necessary safety precautions.
You will be graded using the following rubrics.
Kindly read the rubrics.
