Q1 Answer
Q1. (a) Two employees, Meng and Sarah check their email once a day. Mark
The diagram below give the box-and-whisker plots of the time
they spent on checking their emails for each of the 15 randomly
selected working days.

Sarah

Meng

(i) Based on the box-and-whisker plots above, describe and compare 3M

the data set of Meng and Sarah.
Solution:
 Meng generally took longer time on checking the emails
than Sarah.
 There are no outliers on the time Sarah spent to check her
email but there is outlier in Meng.
 Interquartile range of the time Sarah spent on checking the
email is less that the interquartile range of Meng.

(ii) Which central tendency measurement, mean or median, is 3M

appropriated for data set of Meng. Explain your answer.
Solution:
Median is more appropriate for the data set of Meng since there is
an outlier. Mean is more influenced by the outlier.

(iii) If the mean and standard deviation of the time Meng spent on 4M
checking his email are 21 min and 15 min, respectively. Whereas,
the mean and standard deviation for Sarah are 32 min and 5 min,
respectively. Identify which employee is relatively more
consistent in the time spent on checking their emails. Explain your
answer.
Solution:

Coefficient of variation of Meng is

Coefficient of variation of Sarah is

Sarah is more consistent in the time spent on checking her email

since the value of coefficient of variation is smaller compared to
Meng.

(c)(i) 3M

There is a strong positive linear relationship

(ii) ̂ 5M

Interpretation

When there is not smoking in a day, the

concentration of serum cotinine is expected to
be 47.982 ng/L, on the average.

When the average number of cigarettes

smoked in a day increases by one unit, the
concentration of serum cotinine is expected to
increase by 15.102 ng/L, on the average.

(iii) The value 48 is around 47.9817, indicates the cotinine level when 3M
number of cigarette smoked is 0. Hence, the upper bound of 68 is
used to determine.

( )

Hence, the light smoker is a person who smokes 1.326 cigarette
