CORONA PORTFOLIO

Why does the church give emphasis to the poor? Is poverty desirable? What virtues are
there in being a poor?
The church gives emphasis to the poor because they are the people who are more in need of
support when it comes to their essential needs may it be intangible or tangible. They are the one
who needs support more especially from the church, the church will be their foundation in
keeping their faith and to strive harder in life. The church will be a symbol of hope and guidance
that God is and will be with them every step of the way. The virtues that are instilled in the poor
is the same virtue that we see in Jesus, Jesus being one of our role models in church all of us
especially the poor inherits the virtues that Jesus possesses.

Read and summarize : church of the poor, dialogue with the poor. Question : What is the
church of the poor
From the PCP-II document church of the poor is “A Church that embraces and practices the
evangelical spirit of poverty which combines detachment from possessions with a profound trust
in the Lord as the only source of salvation… A Church [that] will courageously defend and
vindicate the rights of the poor and the oppressed even when doing so will mean alienation or
persecution from the rich and powerful… A Church where nobody is so poor as to have nothing
to give, and nobody so rich as to have nothing to receive.”

The “Church of the poor” is not the poor that we thought of as poverty, the word poor is a
metaphor for “all”. The church of the poor made the church more humane and realistic, meaning
they are more easily to reach out with and they are not a church who thinks highly of
themselves where people are too afraid to attach with. The church of the poor does not only
tackle “poverty” itself but it is also for those who are privileged and comfortable. The church of
the poor reminds us of our brothers and sisters who are in need of help at the same time
reminds ourselves to detach from our materialistic ways and live a life that is simple and also
focus on our spiritual needs.
Definition of terms websites used to define these terms are in the sources (last page of this paper)
a. Climate emergency : The term “climate emergency” has been championed by climate
activists and pro-climate action politicians seeking to add a sense of urgency to the way
we respond to what is a long-term problem
b. Climate change : Climate change is the global phenomenon of climate transformation
characterized by the changes in the usual climate of the planet (regarding temperature,
precipitation, and wind) that are especially caused by human activities. As a result of
unbalancing the weather of Earth, the sustainability of the planet’s ecosystems is under
threat, as well as the future of humankind and the stability of the global economy.
c. Ecological citizenship : Ecological citizenship is presented as an example and inflection
of post-cosmopolitan citizenship. It is contrasted with environmental citizenship. The
ecological footprint is presented as the ecological citizenship's version of political space,
and global warming is used to exemplify the asymmetrical relations of globalising
cause-and-effect that call forth post-cosmopolitan obligations.
d. Global warming : Global warming, the phenomenon of increasing average air
temperatures near the surface of Earth over the past one to two centuries
e. Renewed integral ecology : Integral ecology is a key concept in chapter four of Laudato
Si’, Pope Francis’ encyclical on the environment. It flows from his understanding that
“everything is closely related” and that “today’s problems call for a vision capable of
taking into account every aspect of the global crisis.”

documentary of api ako sa apeco : reflection

a. Is poverty a divine punishment?
Poverty is not a divine punishment because nobody deserves to be punished. God also does
not want us to suffer, we know God as someone “who” is compassionate and we believe that
suffering is not a “punishment” from Him but instead it's something to strengthen us or maybe a
test of faith in believing in Him. God has always a plan for us but it is up to us if we believe in
Him and do our part. In today’s setting poverty is not seen as a divine punishment but instead it
is due to capitalism and the lack of support of the government. Through capitalism poverty also
rises, we see big corporations taking advantage of the poor people by not giving them any
contract to be regularized, giving them underwage salaries, no benefits such as (SSS, PAG
IBIG) and the like.
b. Cite and reflect a specific teaching of jesus in the gospel that you can use to effect
justice for the poor
From my answer in the first part a verse that i could relate to this is “when he saw the crowds,
he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a
shepherd” from Matthew 9:36 because the sheep without a shepherd is symbolized as the
people who are victimized by capitalism. They were “harassed” by the capitalists who are taking
advantage of them with their below minimum wages and they are “helpless” because they have
no one to ask help from. Even though they were going through something God still looked at
them with compassion, this is a reminder that God did not choose to punish these people
instead this is an effect of self-centered and insensitive people.

Unit 3 lesson 3
a. Reflect on the plight of the poor and the rich in the philippines today amid the
outbreak of the coronavirus
The coronavirus greatly affected each and every one of us, especially the poor. It is an absolute
struggle for them since they get below minimum wage meaning they don’t have any spare
money to use during this lockdown. Another case why it is a struggle for them ics because most
of them are not regular from their work which means they are not receiving any benefits where
in they can loan money during times like this, they are also exempted from having benefits from
the government from the company that they are working because they’re not regulars yet. The
government may give them allowance and food but it is not enough to fit it in 1-2 weeks. For the
rich it may be a blessing for them to have a time off in this pandemic, some of them are too
detached from reality while some are still trying to reach out to the poor and needy.

b. “The image of the earth is the image of God too”

The image of earth is the image of God too because it reflects our actions. Through the image
of earth and God we can see how and what type of people we are, we can see how
irresponsible we are and insensitive. If we are irresponsible and insensitive we tend to be
distant with God making the image of the earth dirty and messy.
