Case Study No. 2: The Outsider
The problem:
Mr. Santiago is new to the company but already assigned as assistant to the president and chief
executive officer. Some employees think that it is somehow unfair because he is just new to the company
and his effectiveness, efficiency and credibility has not yet known. Also, his ability to communicate and
understand the information about work is still lacking. It is unclear to everyone that someone new has a
higher position, and those employees who worked hard for years in the company is still not promoted.
Case Facts:
Peter Movers Corporation is expanding its operation in its construction business and trading activity,
which is why they hired Mr. Roger Santiago a nontechnical executive as assistant to the President and
chief- executive officer since they need to hire new and fresh executive for the growing work force.
The old managers do not approve the appointment of Mr. Santiago. Mr. Santiago had difficulty in getting
important information from the employees. But he still proved his worth by instituting new work
programs and managerial activity for the betterment of the employee and his company.
Analysis / Hypothesis:
Mr. Santiago’s perseverance eventually proved his appointment to the old managers that doubted his
capabilities. Although it is risky to hire someone new in the executive department while in the midst of
expansion, it can also be a good thing to bring new perspective to the company. Fresh and innovative
ideas are somewhat a company needs because they are stuck in their old ways. When a company don’t
take risks of new policies they become stagnant and doesn’t improve eventually they lag behind other
competitors.
Since Mr. Santiago is new to the company, he had difficulty gathering important information from line
managers due to the fact that he is new to the company and he hasn’t proved his worth yet. However, he
proved his worth by doing a great job. Here are some ways he could have improved more:
1. Developed a working bond with his line managers.
2. Asked advice from his employees.
3. Employees should have welcomed new ideas by Mr. Santiago when it is only for the betterment
of the company.
Conclusion:
Mr. Santiago proved his worth with his management skills. He thought of ideas which a company could
improve farther in their production and work force. Although, he had difficulty in the beginning, he
persevered to bring the company up to speed with other construction business.
Recommendation:
Although, Mr. Santiago did well on his work, the President of the company should have gathered
opinions from his managers on how well they would do if he hired a new employee on the executive
department. That would have lessened the difficulty of Mr. Santiago regarding his line managers. Also,
Mr. Santiago should have persevered to get close to his employees and asked how his performance is
doing for them and the company. But overall, Mr. Santiago performed well on his job.
