Author’s Note
This sweet and playful collection includes embroidery motifs for
just about every animal under the sun! In addition to popular pets
like cats and dogs, there are designs for hedgehogs, badgers, and
even a flying squirrel. Each embroidered creature possesses its
own whimsical personality and storybook-inspired design. All
380 motifs can be created quickly and easily using simple embroi-
dery, cross-stitch, and appliqué techniques, making them perfect
for embellishing and adorning anything made from fabric. I hope
you enjoy stitching these fun and friendly little designs. Welcome
to the teeny tiny menagerie!

Embroidery Floss Needles

Embroidery needles
No. 25 embroidery floss
All of the motifs in this book are stitched with This book uses two different types of needles:
No. 25 embroidery floss, which is composed embroidery needles (pictured on left) and cross-
of six strands of long-staple mercerized cotton stitch needles (pictured on right). Embroidery
thread. The strands can be separated, allowing needles have sharp tips, while cross-stitch needles
you to make your embroidery appear thick or have rounded tips designed specifically for cross-
thin. This type of embroidery floss is inex- stitch fabric. Both types of needles are available
pensive to buy and is widely available at craft in a range of sizes, so choose the one works best

you are using.
Fabric shears
Fabric
You can embroider just about any type of fabric, Use small thread clips with fine blades to trim
including cotton, linen, felt, and wool. For best embroidery floss and large fabric shears to cut
results, look for a plain-woven fabric designed out embroidery and appliqué fabric.
especially for embroidery. The designs in this
book are small, so you don’t need to use a hoop.
However, you may find a hoop helpful if you’re
working on a large piece or with a thin fabric.

How to Transfer the Designs
Basic Method
This simple technique uses colored chalk paper to transfer designs onto fabric. Colored chalk paper is available at fabric
and craft stores. This method is best suited for traditional embroidery fabrics, such as cotton or linen.
3. Trace the design with a pen 4. The design has now been
or pencil. transferred to your fabric.
9
Alternative Method
This traditional Japanese method is a great option when working with more complex fabrics. It can be challenging to
transfer the design to thick, textured fabrics like wool and thin, delicate fabrics like silk. If you are experiencing difficulty
transferring your design, try copying the design onto a thin piece of paper, such as Japanese washi paper, then baste the
paper to the embroidery fabric. Embroider the design, then remove the basting and gently rip away the washi paper. If the
embroidery design is filled with solid areas of stitching, such as long and short stitch, it’s best to embroider the outline,
then remove the washi paper before filling in the design. This will prevent your embroidery from looking bulky.

and gently rip away washi paper.
Transfer Products
There are a number of great products on the market
today that can help you transfer designs to your fabric
quickly and easily. Look for Wash-Away Stitch Stabilizer
from C&T Publishing, which works in just four simple
steps:
1. Print, copy, or trace your design on to a sheet
2. Stick it down in position on your fabric
3. Stitch your design right through it
4. Dissolve it...the printed stabilizer washes away easily
in water without damaging your work

12
Right Side vs. Wrong Side
The wrong side of your embroidery is just as important as the right side because it can influence the finished appearance
of your work. Always start and finish your threads as shown on the previous page in order to produce neat, professional-
looking finished designs. The photos below show finished designs as they appear on both the right side and wrong side.
Make small, neat knots and trim the thread ends (rs) (ws)
close to the surface of the embroidery fabric.
This will prevent the design from appearing
bulky or bumpy on the right side of the work.
After stitching the nose and eye, make a small knot and
trim the thread end to keep the work flat.
13
How to Appliqué
The type of fabric you use will determine which appliqué technique you should follow. If you use felt, you don’t
need to worry about the fabric unraveling, so you can use the raw edge appliqué method. If you use a woven fabric,
such as cotton, you’ll need to take a few extra steps to finish the edges of the fabric. In this guide, we hand-appliquéd
using embroidery floss, but feel free to use your favorite machine or hand sewing thread. Note: The photos below
use a contrasting color of thread for visual clarity. When actually stitching, use thread that matches your appliqué
fabric for a beautiful and subtle finish.

How to Read the Templates
The templates included in this book will produce finished designs that are the same size as pictured in the
photographs. The templates can be enlarged or reduced as desired. Use a photocopier to blow up or shrink
the templates to the size you’d prefer.
Embroidery Templates
On each page of templates, you’ll find a stitching guide with general instructions for embroidering the
designs. In addition, each template includes labels with specific instructions for that individual design. This
includes stitch names for the different elements of the design, suggested embroidery floss colors, and the
number of strands used for each area. Follow these recommendations if you want your embroidery to look
like the samples in the book, or have fun experimenting with different stitches and colors to create your own
unique designs. The example below shows how embroidery instructions are provided throughout the book.

Cross-Stitch Templates
The templates for cross-stitch designs are printed on grids, making the pattern easy to read. Symbols are used to show
which color of embroidery floss to use for each section. A stitch key lists the embroidery floss color that corresponds
to each symbol. Thick black lines and dots indicate when to use a stitch other than cross-stitch. These lines are always
labeled, so you’ll know where to straight stitch, backstitch, or French knot stich. The example below shows how
cross-stitch instructions are provided throughout the book.
