What is Management?

Management is the process of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling the activities of an
organization effectively and efficiently to achieve its goals. Management provides the means to maintain
a firm’s competitive advantage. It lays out the foundation of successful operations that lead to efficiency
and profitability and establishes the link between the development of strategies and their
implementation and control. Also, management is essential for an organized life and necessary to run all
types of management. Good management is the backbone of successful organizations.

Who are Managers?

A manager is some one who works with and through other people by coordinating their work activities
in order to accomplish organizational goal. Manager performs various job, duties, and responsible for
higher profits and great performance. Here are the following figure of managers.

 Top managers are responsible for developing the organization’s strategy and being a steward for
its vision and mission.
 Functional managers are responsible for the efficiency and effectiveness of an area, such as
accounting or marketing.
 Supervisory or team managers are responsible for coordinating a subgroup of a particular
function or a team composed of members from different parts of the organization.
 A line manager leads a function that contributes directly to the products or services the
organization creates.
 A general manager is someone who is responsible for managing a clearly identifiable revenue-
producing unit, such as a store, business unit, or product line.

What is an Organization?

A social group with well-coordinated processes and activities for the purpose of achieving the company’s
objectives and interacts with the environment where it is situated. Organization is also the act of
forming or establishing something like an organization. It can also refer to a system of arrangement or
order, or a structure for classifying things. Oranizations, therefore, need to keep abreast of all these
changes and managers need to be dynamic and flexible to address the challenges that changes bring.

Why study Management?

Studying management teaches how to effectively lead and manage others to help individuals, teams and
organizations meet their full potential. Management also involves with the coordination and overseeing
the work of activities of other to be achieved by their organizational goals. Therefore studying
management can give us value and benefits to become a more effective leader, team player,
interpersonal communicator and excellent career opportunities.

What are the functions of management?

 Planning – the management function wherein managers identify and select the company’s goals
and determine the corresponding courses of action in order to achieve them.
 Organizing – refers to structuring the business organization where employees are grouped
together to perform jobs or task.
 Leading – a management function where managers influence and encourage their subordinates
to perform their task.
 Controlling – a management function that requires managers to identify any deviations from
strategies and methods and implement corrective actions to maintain or improve performance.
