1. WHAT IS SITUATION TEST?

Students who have applied for Bachelor of Design Programme are called for Situation Test
after clearing their written test.

NIFT calls students, three times the number of seats, for the final and qualifying round of
Situation Test. NIFT Situation Test is held at the various NIFT Centers all across the country.

In situation test student is required to create a three dimensional model with various
materials provided; based on a specific topic or theme mentioned.

The student is provided with materials like, ice cream sticks, mount board, color papers,
straws, thread etc…They are given three hours to make a three dimensional model.

The model will be evaluated on space visualization, innovative and creative use of given
material, composition of elements, color scheme, construction skill, finesse of the model
and overall presentation etc. These parameters will be checked with the write up explaining
the concept behind the model constructed.

A 50- 100 words creative write up explaining the concept and design is expected from
S
students. The weightage of the write up in selection process is 30%. The write up has to be
in English; no marks will be given for write up in any other language.

BR

2. HOW SHOULD STUDENTS ATTEMPT THE SITUATION

TEST?
I. Read the question carefully to understand the situation (question) asked:
The first step is to understand the question asked. Usually there are three types of exercises
usually asked:

Observation based: For example:

Replicate the scene at Polling booth (NIFT 2014)
In this question students are expected to depict maximum things or environment that is
seen at Polling booth.

Concept based: For example:

Create a model on Road safety (NIFT 2015)
Here student needs to creatively work on a concept to show road safety importance.

Observation + concept: For example

Create a window display
So students have to show window display and it can be on certain theme or concept. For
example during summer window display can include elements of summer example
sunglasses, sun, caps etc , During monsoon it can include certain elements related to rain.

1
Bhanwar Rathore Design Studio www.rathoredesign.com

So read the question carefully and make a choice of the question that you think you can
attempt well.

II. Understand the material provided:

As we have to make maximum use of the materials and no additional material will be
provided so before starting with the question, be very careful in noting what all materials
you have been provided.
Do carry some stationary material along with you such as scissors, paper cutter,
pencils, compass, fevicol/ feviquick, ballpoint pen.

III. Concept and plan:

Always develop a concept that provides appropriate solution to the exercise. It should be
simple and implementable. Spend your first 10 minutes in planning the concept.
Most importantly plan your time. Many students don’t complete their model due to poor
time planning.

IV. Doodle sketch/ Rough sketch:

It is advisable to make a rough sketch of the concept you want to implement. So that you
can go ahead according to the sketch.

V. Create the 3D model:

S
Make maximum use of the materials provided and go ahead as per your concept sketch. You
will be leaving the model and the assessor will give marks to the model after your exit from
D
the examination centre, so ensure that the concept you have worked stays in the same
condition as you have created. Ensure the material used stays intact and the base of the
BR

model is able to hold the concept.

VI. Concept write up:

Do not forget to mark a title or caption to the model on the sheet given to you, along with a
write up of 50-100 words describing the model and explaining the concept and idea to the
assessor.

3. WHAT ARE THE CRITERIA FOR JUDGING THE STUDENTS IN

SITUATION TEST?
Students generally get confused with the judging criteria of the jury panel members in the
situation test. It is not always about how attractive, decorative and gaudy your model is.
Here are the things the jury will assess candidates on:
1. How good is your concept: if it is a concept based question then how different you
have worked on your concept, and if its an observation based question then
maximum details included in your model will get you maximum marks.

2. Space visualization: How well your concept is executed in the model.

2
Bhanwar Rathore Design Studio www.rathoredesign.com

3. Material use: Innovative and creative use of given materials. Maximum use of the
materials provided. Using material keeping in mind the quality, quantity and
properties of the material provided.

4. Construction skill: Neatness in the use of materials.

5. Aesthetic sense: How good are the color sense and presentation skills.

6. Execution: Whether the task is complete in the allotted time duration.

7. Writing skills: Creative write up. The concept and idea is explained in simple and
understandable words.

4. HOW TO WRITE A CONCEPT WRITE UP

Candidates should not only focus on the model making but also on the creative method to
give a justified explanation to the concept made.
This will help the jury panel to understand the idea and give better justification to the model
made. S
Few things you should keep in mind, while writing about the concept are:
D
1. Explain the inspiration and theme for the concept.
2. Explain material used, why and which material is used for particular thing.
3. Keep it short and simple to understand.
BR

4. Brief any specific highlight if it is there in your model.

3D MODEL MAKING AND MATERIAL MANIPULATION

–WITH CLAY
"Hand building" is working with clay by hand using only simple tools, not the pottery
wheel. Before potters had the wheel, they were creating beautiful pots and clay forms
using clay, their hands and fingers, and basic hand tools.
Below are the two most common forms of creating hand built pots: pinch pot and coiling
techniques. Most do not realize the infinite world of hand building and the artistic
possibilities it opens.

Pinch pot
Begin a pinch pot by forming a lump of clay into a smooth sphere that fits the size of the
hand. This method is similar to the way the Native Americans shaped clay into useful pots.
While holding the sphere of clay, press the thumb into the center of the ball, half-way to the
bottom. While revolving the ball in one hand, press the walls out evenly with the thumb into
the inside and the fingers on the outside. Smooth the surface with a damp sponge.
1) Form two equal sized balls of clay, approximately 1/2 pound each.
2) Hold ball in left hand and push right thumb into the middle of the ball leaving about 1/4" -
1/2" thickness at the bottom.
3) Slowly and evenly pinch the clay, starting at the bottom rotating the ball, moving toward
S
the top edge. Leave about 1/4" thickness at edge.
4) Once both pinch pots have been created, score with a pin tool both edges.
D
5) Apply slip heavily to one pot.
6) Join pots. They might not fit exactly, this is fine. Slide the back of the thumb from one pot
BR

over seam onto the other.

7) Once the seam is completely sealed, air is trapped like a balloon and the object can be
altered to create desired shape by gently rolling and pressing.
8) To form a head, make another much smaller pinch pot and attach it to body form using
the slip and score method described above (not shown).
9) Add legs and feet, always remembering to slip and score everything.
10) To form spines, roll small pieces of clay into approximately 1/2" long coils. Fold in half
and press folded end onto clay body, smearing and smoothing as you go.
11) Cut a hole on the bottom to allow air to escape while drying and during firing. Also,
create an air passage between the head and the body.
12) Dry very slowly by lightly covering the finished work.
13) High firing (cone 6 or higher) is recommended to insure the spines are not too fragile in
the finished product.

Coil Method
Coils of clay can be used to build bowls, vases and other forms in various shapes and sizes.
Keeping the fingers flat, form the clay into sausage shapes, then roll into ropes 1/4 to 1/2
inches thick. Make a shallow dish with the pinch pot method and turn up-side down to serve
as a foot of base. Place a coil along the edge of the foot. Dampen the fingers and join the
next coil to it, with a little pressure. Keep adding coils . Coils may be pressed with the fingers

or a tool on both the inside and outside to create interesting texture.
