Solar String Calculations

Step 1: Calculate Minimum Number of Panels in a String

Note Maximum Power Voltage 𝑈𝑀𝑃𝑃 (V) from Solar Panel Datasheet = 40.5V

Note MPPT Range for Full Load (V) from Inverter Technical details and take

Lower Range Value = 520V

𝐿𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 𝑀𝑃𝑃𝑇 𝑅𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝐹𝑢𝑙𝑙 𝐿𝑜𝑎𝑑 (𝑉)

Minimum Number of Panels in a String =
𝑀𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑚𝑢𝑚 𝑃𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑈𝑀𝑃𝑃 (𝑉)
520𝑉
Minimum Number of Panels in a String = = 12.8395 ≅ 13
40.5𝑉

Step 2: Temperature Impact on Number of Panels

Note Open Circuit Voltage 𝑈𝑂𝐶 (V) from Solar Panel Spec Sheet = 49.2V

Section 690-7 of the NEC establishes a temperature-dependent voltage correction factor that is to be
applied to the Open Circuit Voltage 𝑈𝑂𝐶 (V) in order to establish the system voltage. This factor on the
Open Circuit Voltage 𝑈𝑂𝐶 (V) is needed because, as the operating temperature of the module decreases,
Open Circuit Voltage 𝑈𝑂𝐶 (V) increases. The rated Open Circuit Voltage 𝑈𝑂𝐶 (V) is measured at a
temperature of 25°C.

An extreme minimum temperature of −4.0 °C (24.8 °F) was recorded on 15 January 1978 so
multiplicative factor from table we got is 1.12.

𝑈𝑂𝐶 𝑎𝑓𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑇𝑒𝑚𝑝 𝐼𝑚𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑡 = 49.2𝑉 × 1.12 = 𝟓𝟓. 𝟏𝟎𝟒𝑽

Step 3: Calculate Maximum Number of Panels in a String
Note Open Circuit Voltage 𝑈𝑂𝐶 (V) after temperature impact is = 𝟓𝟓. 𝟏𝟎𝟒𝑽

Note MPPT Range for Full Load (V) from Inverter Technical details and take

Higher Range Value. 850V

𝐻𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑀𝑃𝑃𝑇 𝑅𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝐹𝑢𝑙𝑙 𝐿𝑜𝑎𝑑 (𝑉)
Maximum Number of Panels in a String = 𝑂𝑝𝑒𝑛 𝐶𝑖𝑟𝑐𝑢𝑖𝑡 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑈
𝑂𝐶 (𝑉)𝑎𝑓𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑡𝑒𝑚𝑝 𝑖𝑚𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑡

850𝑉
Maximum Number of Panels in a String = = 15.42 ≅ 15
55.104𝑉

Step 4: Check that Maximum String Size Falls within MPPT

Range

MPPT Range for Full Load (V) = 𝑀𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑚𝑢𝑚 𝑁𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑃𝑎𝑛𝑒𝑙𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑎 𝑆𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 ×
𝑀𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑚𝑢𝑚 𝑃𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑈𝑀𝑃𝑃 (𝑉)

MPPT Range for Full Load (V) = 15 × 40.5𝑉 = 𝟔𝟎𝟕. 𝟓𝑽 which is within 520V-850V
Range.
Now Calculate the MPPT Full Load Voltage by Multiplying
𝑼𝑶𝑪 𝒂𝒇𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑻𝒆𝒎𝒑 𝑰𝒎𝒑𝒂𝒄𝒕 × 𝑀𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑚𝑢𝑚 𝑁𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑃𝑎𝑛𝑒𝑙𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑎 𝑆𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐶𝑎𝑙𝑐𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝑖𝑛 𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑝 2

55.104𝑉 × 15 = 𝟖𝟐𝟔. 𝟓𝟔𝑽

Check if the Voltage value in MPPT Range Full Load Voltage Given in Inverter Datasheet

𝟖𝟐𝟔. 𝟓𝟔𝑽 < 𝟖𝟓𝟎𝑽

This value is within 520V-850V Range given in Inverter Datasheet so the Maximum Number of
Panels after Temperature Impact are 15.
Step 5: Calculate Maximum PV Power
Power of Single Panel = 405W, Number of Panels = 15, Total Number of Strings in Inverter = 10

𝑀𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑚𝑢𝑚 𝑃𝑉 𝑃𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 (𝑊)𝑖𝑛 𝑆𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒 𝑆𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 = 405𝑊 × 15 = 𝟔𝟎𝟕𝟓𝑾

𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑀𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑚𝑢𝑚 𝑃𝑉 𝑃𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 (𝑊) 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑖𝑛𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑡𝑒𝑟 = 6075𝑊 × 10 = 𝟔𝟎𝟕𝟓𝟎𝑾
Note: Maximum PV Power Given in the Datasheet of inverter is 65000W.
