Mangan Tayo: Nutrition for our Soul (Essay Entry)

While our theme for the 2020 Nutrition Month involves a famous Pangasinan
catchphrase “Mangan Tayo”, do we actually interpret this line correctly? In this generation,
teenagers tend to forget what the end game of eating really is. It is the nutrition, the
content of what we intake. Food is not made to give us satisfaction but to nourish our
body to be able to move and work. According to research, a person can only live up to 8
to 20 days without food and water. Our daily intake can make a big difference to our future
health and that is why we should be careful on what kinds of food we eat or buy everyday.
As Christians, we cannot depend on food alone because we live by the word of God. The
word of God is a basic necessity to Christian living. It provides knowledge, gives us
lessons and reminders on how to properly utilize our time and lives given by the Almighty
God. It is our food and our water. It is given that we should do our best to keep ourselves
nourished not only physically, but more importantly, spiritually. But the question is are we
really trying our best to nourish our souls? Or do we go to church only to give us the
satisfaction being the “Christians” that we are?

Eating healthy and being happy can sometimes be hard. Fast foods or junk foods
makes us happy since it is good and delicious. Personally, I really don’t like eating out
just because I prefer staying home rather than going out; I like sleeping better than going
out. This is how I avoid eating unhealthy foods. But how about our souls? How can we
stay happy and healthy at the same time? Being a happily nourished youth is actually not
that hard. You just have to read a little and spare some of your extra time to learn. Here
are some tips!

Step one to all of this is do not live in the past and try to change your approach. “Then
Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and
whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 3:65). We cannot change the past. It
is already done and we will never be able to go back. What we can do is to use that past
experience and take it as an inspiration to be a better version of ourselves. Forget
anything that will keep you from moving on and move forward with God. This bible verse
says it all. It reassures us of our future with Him and says that it will be bountiful and
abundant. Also, change your perspective. Look at the brighter side and be optimistic.
Upon seeing the negative side, use it to challenge yourself that you cannot be taken down
by that experience. Crying about it will only give you stress and wrinkles! Have a Christian
mindset and stop trying to be what the world wants you to be.

Spend some time with God and grow in gratefulness. “Give us today our daily bread”
(Matthew 6:11). Have some small sessions with God. Maybe spare 10 minutes to have
your own devotion. It can be when you wake up, before you sleep, you know what? It can
be anytime. Read a chapter or two. You will never realize, you already finished reading
the bible! After that, pray. Reflect on what you read. Talk to Him and give thanks to Him
who provides, protects and guides us all the time because this is the least we can do. We
have all the time we need to do this right now. Use it and make this a habit!

“Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now
accepteth thy works.” (Ecclesiates 9:7). And for this last one, serve your church and stop
comparing. As a member of UMYFP, I`d like to encourage the youth to actively participate
to church activities. You get to meet new friends, interact with different people, and have
a stronger connection with God. Avoid comparing yourself to other people because you
are your own self. We are all fearfully and wonderfully made and we should be happy
about it! Let us pay attention to keeping our faith burning like a furnace and not comparing
ourselves to the world`s standards. This way, we will be able to eat and drink with joy and
a merry heart.

Let us always keep in mind what goal we are aiming for. It is our long term health; the
eternal life with the Almighty God. Let us start now just like what the saying says, take it
slowly but surely. As youths, we should spend the rest of our lives to be a good steward.
We are barely halfway through our lives. Might as well be an influence to other people.
Lastly, take note, “What goes into someone`s mouth does not defile them, but what comes
out of their mouth defiles them.” (Matthew 15:11).
