Q: Write down the role of clinical psychologist?

Ans: Role of Clinical Psychologist


Clinical psychologist deals with psychological problems in
different settings. They have to address many issues related to
problem individuals along with administration, supervisions and
teaching in clinical institutes.
1. Therapy / Intervention : It is most important role of clinical
psychologist . Different types of therapy are in practice, often
it requires one to one relationship, but couple therapy, family
therapy and group therapy are also used commonly. Therapy
varies along many different dimensions.

2. Assessment / Diagnosis: All clinical psychologists engage


in assessment of one form or another. The purpose of
assessment is to better understand the client so that a better
decision can be made.
 Assessment is a way of gathering information to answer
the questions to solve the problem of a client.
 Observation, testing or interviewing are the techniques
used in assessment by clinical psychologist.
 It is the assessment that is referred as “expert opinion”
and determines the techniques of intervention. & it is a critical
part of clinical psychologists’ role.

3. Teaching: Clinical psychologists may perform full time or part


time clinical teacher or professor. Teachers have the
responsibility to teach courses in advance psychopathology,
psychological testing and intervention at graduate or post
graduate level. Some of them also teach at undergraduate
courses such as abnormal psychology, personality, introduction
to clinical psychology and so on.
 Practicing clinical psychologists may teach evening
courses at college or university or may even have part time
appointments in graduate programs.
 Clinical psychologists may also teach informal classes or
do orientations work with other mental health personnel,
such as nurses, aides , social workers, occupational
therapists in clinical settings.
 They can also go out in the community and lead
workshops on various topics for police officers, volunteers,
ministers, probation officer and others.

4. Clinical supervision: This activity is another form of


teaching.
 Whether in university, internship or general clinical
settings, clinical psychologists often spend significant
portions of their time , supervising the students interns
and others.
 They maintain controlled and secure conditions for a
trainee supervisor relationships.
5. Research: As the clinical psychologists are trained both as
scientist and as practitioners, they remain absorb in research
activities in a professional manner.
 By virtue of their training in research, their extensive
experience with people in distress and their knowledge
of both therapy and assessment , clinical psychologists
have the ability both to consume and to produce new
knowledge.
 Clinical psychologists have enormous range of research.
Research studies include searching for the cause of
mental disorders, development and validation of
assessment devices , evaluation of therapy techniques
and much more.

6. Consultation: Consultation may take innumerable forms and


in many different settings. A clinical psychologist may be
hired on a permanent basis to provide the staff of and agency
with help
 Consultation may come in the form of case by case
advice or the consultant might be asked to discuss
general problems associated with particular disorders.
 Many clinical psychologists serve as consultants to
physicians who deliver primary care service.
 Consultants can deal with individuals or entire
organization.
 Inshort whatever may be the setting and purpose of
consultancy, it is a significant activity of many clinical
psychologists today.
7. Administration: It is usually said that every clinical
psychologist spend some time on administrative tasks. For
Example: Client record is maintained , research projects are
launched and the progress of institute , organization,
hospitals, clinic or university is also recorded and maintained
on monthly or annual basis.

Clinical psychologists who serve in organization/ institutes or


in hospitals or work for agencies they have to deal with
several committees, and become a part of administration.

Private practices: private practices have grown steadily over the


recent years and now clearly the most frequent role a clinical
psychologist all over the world.
clinical psychologists render their services in different settings
such as:
 Universities, colleges
 Clinics
 Research institutes
 Rehabilitation centers
 Military organizations
 Judicial and correctional institute
 Hospitals
 Government agencies
 Community centers
 Social welfare institutes
 Center for special children.
