ASSIGNMENT QUESTION

This assignment requires you to read journal articles related to the topic of the
statement below. You should then reflect on its ideas and answer the question given
below.

Exposing children as early as possible to language is crucial to language

acquisition (Atkinson, 1988).

(a) Justify the statement above in the light of the Critical Period Hypothesis
(CPH). You should explain what CPH is and relate it to why children should
be exposed to language as early as possible.

(b) In your opinion, if a child is exposed to a second language during the

critical period, would he or she be able to acquire the second language
equally well? Justify.

(c) Apart from exposing children to language as early as possible, the success
of language acquisition also depends on cognitive and affective factors.
Describe and explain how these TWO factors affect language acquisition.

Note: Begin your paper with an introduction, the body of the essay elaborating the above
and a conclusion. Use the assignment rubrics as a guide to achieve cohesion and
coherence. Remember to quote the journal article you have read in your writing.
