Welcome!
About the Pests & Disease Cheat
Sheets

Hi there!

Thank you so much for subscribing and downloading these pests and
disease resources.

These cheat sheets contain natural/organic measures to help prevent

problems that can take down your plants.

Something I want to point out:

● Neem Oil: This is an ingredient I recommend in the organic

neem oil pesticide recipe. Please be sure to use neem oil with
Azadirachtin, as this is the most active ingredient in neem for
killing pests. A lot of neem products don’t include it.
(You can find neem with azadirachtin on our Resources page.)

Pests and disease inevitably show up when you start gardening. If you
can stay ahead of it and know how to prevent the big stuff, you’ll be
well on your way to enjoying some fresh, homegrown food.

Have a wonderful growing season!

NATURAL PREVENTATIVE MEASURES FOR PESTS & DISEASE CHEAT SHEETS

INDOOR SEEDLINGS AND PLANTS

✓ Apply Organic Neem Oil Spray (see included recipe)

Before Germination: Spray the plant tray, bottoms of your containers and tops of the mix every 3 to 4 days over a 10-day period.
(Helps kill insects like fungus gnats if they're present.)
After Germination: Spray a small area of a seedling and wait 48 hours to make sure there isn't a bad reaction. Continue spraying
plant trays, containers, tops of mix and plants. Repeat every 3 to 4 days over a 10-day period.
Notes: Be sure to spray away from your grow lamp (if using). Only spray seedlings in the evening when they won't be under any
light.

✓ Other Steps (ongoing)

Sprinkle cinnamon on the top soil line to help prevent mold.

Place your indoor plants in an area that gets good airflow. If necessary, open doors or run a small fan to help circulate the air.
Add yellow sticky traps around your plants to help catch indoor insects. Place fungus gnat traps (see included recipe) nearby if you
start seeing gnats.

OUTDOOR PLANTS IN CONTAINERS

✓ When They First Go Outdoors

Place plants in an area that gets about 8 hours sunlight. Space your plants apart to encourage good airflow.
Apply a thick layer of mulch, such as straw, to the top of the soil line to help prevent weeds and retain moisture.
Release good insects, such as ladybugs and parasitic wasps, to provide natural pest control.

✓ Ongoing Care

Spray all plant parts with a strong blast of water to knock off any bugs. Do this only in the evening when the sun is going down.
Place fungus gnat traps (see recipe) at the soil level of your plants at first sighting. Replace when needed.

BOTH INDOOR AND OUTDOOR PLANTS

✓ Ongoing Care

Remove fallen and diseased leaves to get rid of the potential for further bugs and/or disease.
Inspect your plants for pest activity. If you find leaves full of bugs or eggs, cut and dispose of them immediately to prevent further
infestation.

ORGANIC PESTICIDE RECIPES

FUNGUS GNAT TRAP

1 Fill a shallow container with approximately 1 to 2 TBSP of apple cider vinegar.

2 Add a couple drops of peppermint oil. (Optional)
3 Add a couple drops of dish soap.
Mix the liquid and leave your container near the plants where you've seen gnat activity. Be sure to replace the solution as necessary
4
until the gnats are gone.

NEEM OIL SPRAY FOR PESTS

1 Pour a quart of water in a spray bottle.

2 Add 1 TSP of neem oil with Azadirachtin. (Azadirachtin is the most active ingredient in neem for killing pests.)
3 Add a few drops of dish soap. Also, add a couple drops of peppermint oil if you have it.
Shake up your bottle to mix the ingredients. Spray a small, leafy area of your plants and wait 48 hours to ensure your plant doesn't
4
react badly to it. (It shouldn't, but this is just an extra precaution.)
Spray the leaves, stems and tops of the soil when the sun goes down. Repeat this every 3 days for about a week or more. (Adult
5
gnats can hang around for 7 to 10 days so this makes sure you kill them during this time span.)

ALTERNATIVE INSECTICIDE SPRAY

1 Fill a spray bottle about half full with water.

2 Add 1 to 2 cups of cooking oil such as corn or olive oil.
Add a few drops of dish soap, and then drop in some spices like cinnamon or basil. Alternately, add a couple drops of peppermint
3
oil.
Shake up your bottle to mix the ingredients. Spray a small, leafy area of your plants and wait 48 hours to ensure your plant doesn't
4
react badly to it. (It shouldn't, but this is just an extra precaution.)
5 Spray the leaves, stems and tops of the soil when the sun goes down. Repeat this daily for 7 to 10 days.
Note: The reason I include this alternate insecticide spray is because of the neem -- a naturally occurring pesticide from the seeds
of the neem tree. Some people say that neem kills bees, while other insists it doesn't. I use neem at sundown when the bees are
gone as a precaution. Just wanted to give you a heads up so you can decide how you want to proceed.
