Q1: Define “Project Charter”.
Answer: The project charter is a document where a project is defined. It provides the project
manager with the authority to apply organizational resources to project activities. In a project
charter scope, objectives and participants are described.
“The Engineers Choice Construction Firm”
The Engineers Choice Construction firm has been awarded a contract for the construction of a 25-storied
multipurpose building. The construction must start by 28 th February 2021 and be completed within three
years. A penalty clause of tk 75,000 per month of delay beyond 27 th February of 2024 as written in the
contract. Jamaluddin, the managing director of the company, called a planning meeting. In the meeting
he expressed great satisfaction at obtaining the contract and revealed that the company could profit as
much as tk 4,00,00,000 on this project. This total project will cost $80,00,00,000 according to the
contact. He was confident that the project could be completed without any delay. Kamal Uddin Lotus,
the project manager, agreed that in a normal time delays might develop due to shortage of manpower
and equipment. However, he reminded the MD that for such a large project, the company would have
to use outsourced equipment. Past experience indicated a sixty-forty chance of a strike.
Technical Details of the multistoried building:
The building is a modern structure with five meeting rooms capacity of 2000 person per room and three
convention centers with capacity of 5000 per hall along with two indoor auditoriums for concert. The
project begins with acquiring the land, an activity that lasts two months. Once the land is acquired, the
work can start on the architectural design of the structure, famous architect Ms. Tania Karim will be
hired for this, this will take one month. The work in the construction site involves construction of each
floor taking one year, HVAC system, Electrification, surface drainage system along with sewerage line
and water supply system which lasts 1.5 months for each. Installing fire extinguishing system will take
2.5 months.
Once the construction is done it’s time to go for interior designing, roof top gardening and roof top
swimming construction. Interior designing will take 3 months, gardening and swimming pool another 6
months. Painting will take one month. The gas line installation will take another one month. The building
will have no gymnasium facilities and outdoor auditoriums. The Now it’s time for grand opening by the
president of Engineers Choice Construction firm Mr. Hadis Uddin.
