Demo Examples for Rotating Machinery in COSMOSFloWorks

Centrifugal Pump:
Use the procedure to setup the problem in a demo situation. Have a configuration with
the converged results. You should have run the model before or you can use the model
with the results. In a demo you can omit the mesh control step and solver step. You
should show the result from an existing run.

Components: Impeller, Volute

Aim:
1. Calculate the Head (H) for the pump (Poutlet-Pinlet).
2. Efficiency for the pump (H*Q/Rot Velocity*Torque)
Given:
1. Volume flow rate, Q = 180 l/min
2. Rot Velocity = 2000 RPM or 209.4 rad/sec

Steps:
1. Open the model Dummy.sldasm in SolidWorks 2006 Sp0.0.
2. Make sure to Add-In COSMOSFloWorks 2006 Sp1.0. Also have a PE license for
COSMOSFloWorks.
3. Using the wizard create a new project as follows:
Configuration name Impeller analysis
Unit system SI
Analysis type Internal; Exclude cavities without flow
condition. Select Rotation.
Fluid Water
Wall condition Adiabatic wall, default smooth walls
Initial and Ambient Conditions Default
Result and Geometry Resolution Default

4. Disable the part “Cavity part”. RMB on Input Data and select Component
Control. Select the part “Cavity part” and select Disable. Select OK. (See Video-
1.avi)
5. Apply RPM to the “Cavity part”. RMB on “Rotating Regions” and select Insert
Rotating Regions. Select “Cavity part” from SolidWorks feature tree. Apply 2000
RPM as the angular velocity. (See Video-2.avi)
6. Next we apply boundary conditions as follows:

Inlet: Select the inlet face as shown in the above figure and then apply a volume
flow rate of 180 l/min.
Outlet: Select the outlet face and then apply the default environmental pressure.
(See Video-3.avi)

TIP: Make sure to select the inner faces for both inlet and outlet boundary
condition. You can use the “Select other” command in SolidWorks to make this
selection.

Stator: Next we make all the inner faces of the Volute as Stator. RMB on
Boundary Conditions and select Insert Boundary Conditions. Select Wall as the
boundary condition. Select the part “Volute” from SolidWorks feature tree and
COSMOSFloWorks automatically populates the dialog box with all the faces.
Click the “Filter” button and then select “Remove Outer Faces”. Select OK.
Select the inlet and outlet face to deselect them from the selection box. In the
Moving wall Settings tab select Stator. Select OK.
(See Video-4.avi)

7. Next we setup the goals as follows (See Video-5.avi):

Average Static Pressure at Inlet (Pinlet)

Average Static Pressure at Outlet (Poutlet)
Y-Component of torque (T). RMB on Goals and select Insert Surface Goals…
From the SolidWorks feature tree select the component “Impeller Demo Done”.
Select “Y Component of Torque”.
Setup an equation goal to calculate “Head” and “Efficiency of Pump”.

8. Mesh Control: It is very important to refine the mesh in the rotating zone to
capture the blades accurately. We will perform the mesh control in 2 stages—
Initial Mesh and Local Mesh. (See Video-6.avi)

a) RMB on Input Data and select Initial Mesh. Turn Off the Automatic settings.
Make the number of cells per X, Y and Z as 32, 20 and 22 respectively.

b) RMB on Local Initial Mesh and select “Insert Local Initial Mesh…” Select the
component “Cavity part”. Go to the Solid/Fluid interface tab and make the
changes.
c) Go to the Refining Cells tab and refine fluid and partial cells to Level 2.

9. Run the analysis and plot the results. Create the goals and observe the Head and
efficiency of the pump.
10. In a demo situation open the configuration with the results and show them the
following:
a) Cut Plot 1.
b) All flow trajectories
c) Goals in Excel format
