INTRODUCTION
HSK 1 Storybook Vol 2 consists of 12 short stories written in Simplified
Chinese and Pinyin with free audio files. The purpose of this book is to
provide readers with reading materials to practice their reading skills as
well as an introduction to more extended sentence structure and longer
articles. The stories are based on everyday life and experience.

HSK 1 Storybook Vol 2 has all the vocabularies and Grammar Points in the
HSK 1 Syllabus. If you finish the book, you would have practised your
reading skill on all the vocabularies and Grammar Points in the HSK 1
Syllabus.

I have tried to restrict the vocabularies used in this book to HSK 1 as far as
possible. Where it is not possible, I have introduced limited new words in
the story. If you have learned all the HSK 1 Vocabulary and completed the
Standard Course Book for HSK 1 by Jiang Liping, you would be able to
read about 85% of this book without learning new words.

I consider the HSK 1 Vocabulary together with the new words introduced
in Standard Course Book as Extended HSK 1 Vocabulary and I will refer to
it as such from now on.

The structure of this book is as follows:

• Statistics – this will provide the reader with an analysis of the words
used in the story and the level of difficulty. It will set out new words
along with Pinyin and explanation. The new words set out here are not
cumulative. New words are set out here as long as the words used are
not in the Extended HSK 1 Vocabulary.
• Story – this section is the story in Simplified Chinese without Pinyin
and the English translation. To test level of reading skills, you should
attempt to read this section first before going to the next.
• Pinyin and Translation – this will be the section for Pinyin and English
translation.
• Appendix – for the benefit of those who need assistance on the HSK
1 and HSK 1 Standard Course vocabularies, I have included them in
this section for your reference.

The stories in this book are individual stories. A reader may choose to read
this book in any particular order. To help you decide which story to read
first, you may take a look at the statistics before you begin. The difficulty
level for each story varies.

女儿在北京

女儿在北京我的女儿去了北京学习汉语。有一天，她会做
一个很好的汉语老师。她已经三个星期没给我们打电话了。
我看我还是给她打个电话吧。

妈妈：喂。
女儿：喂。妈妈！我好想你啊！
妈妈：我也很想你。你为什么不给我们打电话呢？
女儿：我天天都上课，老师让我做很多东西。我这儿八点
的时候，你们那儿已经一点了。我下课后，你们都睡了。
妈妈，你今天为什么不睡觉啊？
妈妈：因为我太想你了，所以我不能不给你打个电话。
女儿：再过三四个星期，我就坐飞机回家。我会住在家一
个月。那你天天都能看见我了！
妈妈：太好了。听到你回来我很高兴。但是，你只住一个
月吗？你不能多住几个月？
女儿：对不起，妈妈。我不能多住几个月。我也想多住几
个月！但是老师让我们做很多东西，这些东西都要在那个
月里做好。
妈妈：没关系。你回来就好了。
女儿：爸爸怎么样？爸爸身体好吗？

妈妈：他不怎么样。医生说他不能吃太多米饭。但是你爸
爸很喜欢吃米饭。我不买米，但有一天，我在家里睡觉的
时候，他去商店买了很多米回来。我什么也做不了。他不
听医生的也不听我的，很难叫他不吃米饭。女儿，你能不
能叫他少吃点儿米饭？我看他会听你的。
女儿：好的。爸爸呢？他是不是在睡觉？
妈妈：他在睡觉。我叫他明天给你打个电话吧。
女儿：对不起。明天下课后，我和同学一起去看电影。下
个星期我会打电话回家，好吗？
妈妈：好吧。你在北京怎么样？有没有多吃点儿菜和米饭？
女儿：有啊。我还学了做几个中国菜。回家后，我给你和
爸爸做点儿中国菜吃。妈妈，我现在要去和同学们一起读
书。
妈妈：好的。我下个星期会再给你打个电话。
女儿：妈妈，我很爱你和爸爸。谢谢你们让我在北京学习
汉语。
妈妈：我们只有你这一个女儿，如果我们不爱你，我们能
爱谁呢？

女儿在北京我的女儿去了北京学习汉语。有一天，她会做
一个很好的汉语老师。她已经三个星期没给我们打电话了。
我看我还是给她打个电话吧。
Nǚ'ér zài běijīng wǒ de nǚ'ér qùle běijīng xuéxí hànyǔ. Yǒu yītiān, tā
huì zuò yīgè hěn hǎo de hànyǔ lǎoshī. Tā yǐjīng sān gè xīngqí méi
gěi wǒmen dǎ diànhuàle. Wǒ kàn wǒ háishì gěi tā dǎ gè diànhuà ba.
My daughter went to Beijing to study Chinese. One day, she will be
a good Chinese teacher. She hasn't called us for three weeks. I think
I'd better call her.

妈妈：喂。
Māmā: Wèi.
Mom: Hello.

女儿：喂。妈妈！我好想你啊！
Nǚ'ér: Wèi. Māmā! Wǒ hǎo xiǎng nǐ a!
Daughter: Hello. mom! I miss you so much.

妈妈：我也很想你。你为什么不给我们打电话呢？
Māmā: Wǒ yě hěn xiǎng nǐ. Nǐ wèishéme bù gěi wǒmen dǎ diànhuà
ne?
Mom: I miss you so much, too. Why didn't you call us?

Nǚ'ér: Wǒ tiāntiān dū shàngkè, lǎoshī ràng wǒ zuò hěnduō dōngxī.
Wǒ zhè'er bā diǎn de shíhòu, nǐmen nà'er yǐjīng yīdiǎnle. Wǒ xiàkè
hòu, nǐmen dōu shuìle. Māmā, nǐ jīntiān wèishéme bù shuìjiào a?
Daughter: I have classes every day. The teacher asked me to do a
lot of things. When it's eight here, it's already one there. After I finish
class, you are all asleep. Mom, why don't you sleep today?

妈妈：因为我太想你了，所以我不能不给你打个电话。
Māmā: Yīnwèi wǒ tài xiǎng nǐle, suǒyǐ wǒ bùnéng bù gěi nǐ dǎ gè
diànhuà.
Mom: Because I miss you so much, I can't help but call you.

女儿：再过三四个星期，我就坐飞机回家。我会住在家一
个月。那你天天都能看见我了！
Nǚ'ér: Zàiguò sānsì gè xīngqí, wǒ jiùzuò fēijī huí jiā. Wǒ huì zhù zàijiā
yì gè yuè. Nà nǐ tiāntiān dū néng kànjiàn wǒle!
Daughter: In three or four weeks, I'll fly home. I'll stay at home for a
month. Then you can see me every day!

妈妈：太好了。听到你回来我很高兴。但是，你只住一个
月吗？你不能多住几个月？
Māmā: Tài hǎole. Tīng dào nǐ huílái wǒ hěn gāoxìng. Dànshì, nǐ zhǐ
zhù yīgè yuè ma? Nǐ bùnéng duō zhù jǐ gè yuè?
Mom: Great. I'm glad to hear that you are coming back. But are you
only staying for one month? Can't you stay for a few more months?

Nǚ'ér: Duìbùqǐ, māmā. Wǒ bùnéng duō zhù jǐ gè yuè. Wǒ yě xiǎng
duō zhù jǐ gè yuè! Dànshì lǎoshī ràng wǒmen zuò hěnduō dōngxī,
zhèxiē dōngxī dū yào zài nàgè yuè lǐ zuò hǎo.
Daughter: I'm sorry, mom. I can't stay for a few more months. I also
want to stay for a few more months! But the teacher asked us to do
a lot of things which need to be completed within that month.

妈妈：没关系。你回来就好了。
Māmā: Méiguānxì. Nǐ huílái jiù hǎole.
Mom: It doesn't matter. It is nice to have you back.

女儿：爸爸怎么样？爸爸身体好吗？
Nǚ'ér: Bàba zěnme yàng? Bàba shēntǐ hǎo ma?
Daughter: How is Dad? Is Dad in good health?

妈妈：他不怎么样。医生说他不能吃太多米饭。但是你爸
爸很喜欢吃米饭。我不买米，但有一天，我在家里睡觉的
时候，他去商店买了很多米回来。我什么也做不了。他不
听医生的也不听我的，很难叫他不吃米饭。女儿，你能不
能叫他少吃点儿米饭？我看他会听你的。
Māmā: Tā bù zě me yàng. Yīshēng shuō tā bùnéng chī tài duō mǐfàn.
Dànshì nǐ bàba hěn xǐhuān chī mǐfàn. Wǒ bú mǎi mǐ, dàn yǒu yītiān,
wǒ zài jiālǐ shuìjiào de shíhòu, tā qù shāngdiàn mǎile hěnduō mǐ
huílái. Wǒ shénme yě zuò bùliǎo. Tā bù tīng yīshēng de yě bù tīng

wǒ de, hěn nán jiào tā bù chī mǐfàn. Nǚ'ér, nǐ néng bùnéng jiào tā
shǎo chī diǎn er mǐfàn? Wǒ kàn tā huì tīng nǐ de.
Mom: He's not very good. The doctor said he couldn't eat too much
rice. But your father likes rice very much. I don't buy rice, but one day
when I was sleeping at home, he went to the store and bought a lot
of rice. I can't do anything. He wouldn't listen to doctor or me. It's
hard to tell him not to eat rice. Daughter, can you tell him to eat less
rice? I think he will listen to you.

女儿：好的。爸爸呢？他是不是在睡觉？
Nǚ'ér: Hǎo de. Bàba ne? Tā shì bùshì zài shuìjiào?
Daughter: Ok. Where's dad? Is he sleeping?

妈妈：他在睡觉。我叫他明天给你打个电话吧。
Māmā: Tā zài shuìjiào. Wǒ jiào tā míngtiān gěi nǐ dǎ gè diànhuà ba.
Mom: He's sleeping. I'll ask him to call you tomorrow.

女儿：对不起。明天下课后，我和同学一起去看电影。下
个星期我会打电话回家，好吗？
Nǚ'ér: Duìbùqǐ. Míngtiān xiàkè hòu, wǒ hé tóngxué yīqǐ qù kàn
diànyǐng. Xià gè xīngqí wǒ huì dǎ diànhuà huí jiā, hǎo ma?
Daughter: I'm sorry. After class tomorrow, I will go to the cinema with
my classmates. I'll call home next week, is it ok?

妈妈：好吧。你在北京怎么样？有没有多吃点儿菜和米饭？
Māmā: Hǎo ba. Nǐ zài běijīng zěnme yàng? Yǒu méiyǒu duō chī diǎn
er cài hé mǐfàn?
Mom: Ok. How are you in Beijing? Do you have more vegetables and
rice?

Nǚ'ér: Yǒu a. Wǒ hái xuéle zuò jǐ gè zhōngguó cài. Huí jiā hòu, wǒ
gěi nǐ hé bàba zuò diǎn er zhōngguó cài chī. Māmā, wǒ xiànzài yào
qù hé tóngxuémen yīqǐ dúshū.
Daughter: Yes. I also learned how to cook a few Chinese dishes.
When I get home, I'll make some Chinese food for you and Dad. Mom,
I'm going to study with my classmates now.

妈妈：好的。我下个星期会再给你打个电话。
Māmā: Hǎo de. Wǒ xià gè xīngqí huì zài gěi nǐ dǎ gè diànhuà.
Mom: OK. I'll call you back next week.

女儿：妈妈，我很爱你和爸爸。谢谢你们让我在北京学习
汉语。
Nǚ'ér: Māmā, wǒ hěn ài nǐ hé bàba. Xièxiè nǐmen ràng wǒ zài běijīng
xuéxí hànyǔ.
Daughter: Mom, I love you and Dad very much. Thank you for letting
me study Chinese in Beijing.

妈妈：我们只有你这一个女儿，如果我们不爱你，我们能
爱谁呢？
Māmā: Wǒmen zhǐyǒu nǐ zhè yīgè nǚ'ér, rúguǒ wǒmen bù ài nǐ,
wǒmen néng ài shéi ne?
Mom: We only have you as our daughter. If we don't love you, who
can we love?
