CH 3 Part 2 Tutorial - May20

This document provides the solutions to problems involving calculating volumetric properties of pure fluids using various equations of state. Specifically: 1) It calculates the compressibility factor (Z) and molar volume (V) of ethane at 50°C and 15 bar using five different equations of state. 2) It calculates the molar volume of saturated liquid and vapor propane at 40°C and 13.71 bar using the Redlich-Kwong equation of state. 3) It provides the characteristic properties like critical temperature, pressure, and acentric factor for various pure substances from a reference table to find parameters for equations of state.

Pure Fluids – Part 2
Tutorial
1. Calculate Z and V for ethane at 50°C (323.15K) and 15 bar by the
following equations:
(a) The truncated virial equation with the following experimental
values of virial coefficients:
B = -156.7 cm3 mol-1 C = 9650 cm6 mol-2
(b) The truncated virial equation [ Eq. (3.38)], with a value of B from
the generalized Pitzer correlation [Eq. (3.63)].
(c) The Redlich / Kwong equation
(d) The Soave / Redlich/ Kwong equation
(e) The Peng / Robinson equation
(Problem 3-33, Smith-VanNess-Abbott)
