    Predisposing factors for cerebrovascular disease include increasing age, male gender, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking. These factors cause blood vessels to lose elasticity and blood flow to decrease over time. Precipitating factors then include physical or mental stress that increase oxygen demand, raise blood pressure, or cause the formation of blood clots/plaque that can dislodge and block vessels in the brain, cutting off blood flow and oxygen. This loss of blood flow and oxygen to areas of the brain causes a cerebrovascular accident or stroke, presenting with symptoms like weakness, dizziness, or paralysis on one side of the body.
