Check Iv") the boxes.

D Don't look at the other person. D Have sorne good topics to discuss.
D Keep qui et when the other person is talking. D Talk about yourself a lot.
D Ask questions that start with what, where, how, or when.

Ei9Jit Tips fer Gre(it Soci(Ái Cenversatiens

Are you shy? Do you find conversations with new people difficult? lf you do, then these eight
tips can help you connect. lf you're outgoing and love to talk, they can help you improve your
conversation skills.

1 Have sorne topics ready to start a conversation. Say something about the weather or the
place you're in. Talk about the weekend - we ali have something to say about weekends!

2 Make the conversation interesting . Know about events in the news. Read restaurant and
movie reviews. Find out about the current music scene or what's new in fashion or sports.

3 Be a good listener. Make eye contact and say, "Yes," "Hmm," "Uh-huh,"
know." And say, "Really? That's interesting." lt encourages people to talk.
"Right," and "I

4 Don't be boring. Don't just say, "Yes" or "No" when you answer a question. Give sorne
interesting details, too.

5 Don't talk all the time. Ask, "How about you?" and show you are interested in the other
person, too. People love to talk about themselves!

6 Ask information questions. Ask questions like, "What do you do in your free time?" or
"What kind of food do you like?" Use follow-up questions to keep the conversation going.
But don't ask too many questions - it's not an interview!

7 Be positive. Negative comments can sound

rude. And if you don't want to answer a personal
question, simply say, "Oh, l'm not sure 1 can
answer that," or "l'd rather not say."

8 Smile! Everyone loves a smile. Just be relaxed,

smile, and be yourself.

B Read the article again and circle the correct words.

1. lt's~o~/ not good to make short responses when you listen.
2. When you answer questions, you can say / don't just reply "Yes" or "No."
3. Ask a couple of /a lot of follow-up questions.
4. Think / Don't think of a conversation like an interview.
5. You have to/ don't have to answer personal questions.
