Rewrite the following sentences, using wish. Keep the original meaning
You live in the countryside. You want to live in the city. What do you wish?
I wish or I wish
About you: What are your three biggest regrets and dreams? Make notes below.
Discussion: Talk about your dreams and regrets with a partner. Ask lots of follow-up questions.
This checks students’ understanding of the target structure. You may wish to present ‘wish’ before handing
out the sheets. Exercise one can then be used to confirm that the students can use the target.
Follow the instructions in the sheet. Students should check in pairs after finishing. You could ask students
to identify which sentences are regrets (about the past) and which are dreams (about the present).
This is the ‘production’ exercise, where students get the chance to personalize the language. Students
should work alone, making notes in the spaces. It’s not necessary to write sentences.
If students are running out of ideas for the wishes (too many ‘foreign holidays’ or ‘more money’, why not
ask them to make a list of the things they don’t like about themselves?
Work in pairs, or small groups. Students make sentences from their notes, while the partner(s) ask follow
up questions. Change roles regularly.
The teacher should monitor but not join in, unless necessary. Make notes of any heinous grammar / vocab
errors, and go through them at the end of the lesson, using the board. See our correction tips in the
teachers’ guide in Handouts Online.
