Introduction to Linguistics (LangEd 40)

The Power of Language Nutrition

1. What does power of language nutrition mean?

The power of language nutrition refers to the positive effects brought by

language nutrition to the brain development, health, and future academic achievement
of a child. Language nutrition refers to language-rich interactions that facilitate
development. Studies have shown the more words spoken to a child, the better the
child’s reading and writing skills, understanding of speech, and vocabulary size.

2. What is the influence of language nutrition on language development?

Since language nutrition is gained through social interaction, social interactions

are therefore crucial for a child’s neurodevelopment. Research has shown that a higher
number of words spoken to a child contributes to increased vocabulary development,
enhanced language and speech processing, and improved literacy outcomes. In other
words, shared dialogic reading positively influences children’s literacy/language skills.
