READING AND WRITING EXERCISE # 1

1. a. Definition: Political incorrectness in today’s context could be defined as an

attitude or a manner of speaking employed by individuals or groups of people

who give little to no regard whether what they say could be construed as

offensive or downright rude by a certain number of people, especially those who

are considered a minority in present society. Examples of these groups are

women, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and the like.

2. a. Summary: One example that could be used to see what political

incorrectness is, is the popular TV sitcom ‘Friends’. Created by David Crane

and Marta Kauffman, the American TV show centers around a group of six

individuals living in New York City during the 90’s, and comically tries to

showcase all the complexities that fact entails. It originally aired from 1994 up

to 2004 in the TV station NBC, but was later taken up by the online streaming

site Netflix early in 2018, which introduced the show to newer, younger viewers.

Unexpectedly, the show received a boatload of backlash from its audience,

saying that the show is downright problematic, promotes homophobia, body

shaming, and emotional abuse, among other things.

3. Out of the show’s 10 long seasons, the issues that most people find problematic

are its reoccurring jokes against fat Monica, the aversion of Ross against his

ex-wife’s true sexuality, Joey’s poor treatment of women, and Chandler’s strong

dislike for being called ‘gay’, and it is easy to see how these issues could be

considered politically incorrect in today’s context, considering that awareness

and sensitivity regarding these topics have greatly increased in the past two

decades. These offhand ‘jokes’ when taken out of the show’s context really

could be seen as offensive and rude, considering that the butt of its punchlines

are people who have constantly been given grief for their sexuality, the way

they look, and even the way they act. However, one must not disregard that this

particular sitcom was created way back in the 90’s, and the context then is

vastly different from the realities of today’s society. The TV show ‘Friends’ is a

reflection of the life, the norms, and the beliefs back in the day, and problematic

as we may see it now, the same sentiment may probably not hold true to the

people who watched it back then. Political incorrectness is subjective at best,

and we cannot control what offends or affects every single person.
