October 10, 2020

Dear Willoughby-Eastlake Families,

Over the weekend, the district learned of exposures to COVID-19 at Longfellow Elementary School and
also at Jefferson Elementary School. These direct exposures have impacted several staff members and
students in multiple classrooms in both buildings, and have made it necessary to transition all persons
in these buildings to virtual learning.
With any exposure, the district works closely with the Lake County General Health District. Through this
work, close contacts of the infected persons have been identified. If you or your child have been identified
as a close contact, you will be receiving a phone call from the health department during the next 24 to 48
hours.
It is the job of the Lake County Health Department to inform you about COVID-19 and also to answer
any questions that you may have as a contact of someone that has been identified as positive for COVID.
At this time, because it is currently necessary to close three school buildings, in accordance with the
Willoughby-Eastlake Reopening Guide, all district school buildings will be closed until further notice.
This means that beginning Monday, October 12, 2020, all students in the district will transition to virtual
learning. Additionally, all extracurricular activities will be suspended immediately until reopening
guidelines are reviewed for those activities.
As we work through this process, we will continue to keep you informed via email and also through our
dial-out system. You will be receiving information from your building principal with updates regarding
the transition to virtual learning for all brick and mortar students.
Lunch distribution will continue to occur and you will receive more information regarding pickups for
meals.
Due to federal privacy laws, we are not permitted to provide the names of the individuals. We believe it is
our responsibility to inform you as members of our Willoughby-Eastlake School District community
about all reports of positive COVID-19 test results that directly impact our District, and we will continue
to share these updates as needed.
Our District is committed to the health and safety of our students, families, and staff. We will continue to
follow our strict safety protocols. For the most up-to-date information on the COVID-19 pandemic, visit
the CDC website at https://www.cdc.gov/.

Sincerely,
Steve Thompson
