World’s Largest Roller Cone Bit: The Preferred Top Hole Solution
BIT: 44" Roller Cone, IADC 111
LOCATION: Saudi Arabia
RESULTS: Varel’s 44" Roller Cone L111 bit, the largest roller cone drilling bit in the world,
has been successfully deployed to the Middle East for top hole drilling. These monster bits
feature an open roller bearing system, six interchangeable carbide nozzles, and they are
compatible with both rotary and motor drive systems. To date, fourteen 44" L111 bits have
been used, both for drilling new hole, with the longest run at 164 ft and 54.8 ft/hr; and
for hole opening, with the longest run of 899 ft.

Best In-Field Achievements, 1.3 + Million Revolutions

BIT: 22" Roller Cone, ER14JMS, IADC 435
LOCATION: Saudi Arabia
RESULTS: This single 22" ER14JMS successfully drilled six sections, achieving
1,372 krevs. With a total footage of 4,433 ft, the bit averaged 739 ft per section
and drilled for a total of 166 hrs for an average ROP of 27 ft/hr. The final grading
of this bit at inspection was an admirable 2-2-WT-A-E-2-TD.

Excellence in Performance: High Roller Bit Series

BIT: 16" Roller Cone, HR18JMRSV, IADC 445
LOCATION: Saudi Arabia
RESULTS: A customer in Saudi Arabia is reporting great performance with the
16" HR18JMRSV High Roller bit. The bit was run with a directional motor assembly
to kick off from vertical and build to 29° inclination at section TD. The bit drilled the
3,677 ft section in its entirety, averaging 36.4 ft/hr for the run. Total bit revolutions
were 1,117 krev and all bearing seals remained effective.
 Voyager Design Sets Multiple Records in Shoe-to-Shoe
Directional Runs
BIT: 12-1/4" PDC, V616PGHXU
LOCATION: Manifa, Saudi Arabia
RESULTS: In Manifa directional wells, Varel’s 12-1/4" Voyager V616PGHXU bit continues
to break drilling records. Run with a rotary steerable system and motor directional
assembly to drill build up sections to 80° inclination, this Voyager bit has established
the top three fastest ROP performances, delivered the longest runs, and drilled the
lowest drilled cost per foot. The fastest penetration rate, shoe-to-shoe, in the offshore
wells was 76 ft/hr with over 4,200 ft drilled. The longest runs achieved have been
a record 7,422 ft, dull 1-2-WT-S-X-I-TD (onshore category); and record 8,110 ft,
dull 2-2-BT-S-X-I-TD (offshore category).

Raider Series Conquers Changing Formations with Long Runs at Fast ROP
BIT: 12" PDC, R819DGX
LOCATION: Saudi Arabia
RESULTS: Varel’s Raider R819DGX design, armed with the latest-generation Vulcan
PDC cutters, was deployed to drill 12" sections in Saudi Arabia Deep Gas fields,
where a complex stratigraphy presents carbonates interbedded with hard stringers,
confined sandstone and dense dolomite. Run with a motor, the R819DGX set consecutive,
outstanding shoe-to-shoe ROP performances, achieving a record at 92.6 ft/hr and
lowest cost per foot.

The same 12" R819DGX design also provided best-in-class performances in a vertical
drilling application in exploration wells in the South and North West areas of the field.
Run in conjunction with a motor, the Varel design achieved longest footage with 6,088 ft
and drilled the fastest ROP reaching rates of 110.5 ft/hr.

 Voyager Bit Delivers Best-in-Class Directional Performance in
8-1/2" Sections
BIT: 8-1/2" PDC, V616PDG1X
LOCATION: Saudi Arabia
RESULTS: In the 8-1/2" hole section of directional wells in the Manifa project, the
V616PDG1X Voyager bit has provided best-in-class performances, both on and offshore.
Run with directional assemblies from various suppliers, Voyager has delivered excellent
directional response in shoe-to-shoe runs, building angle up to 80° inclination in wells
categorized by profile geometry.

Run with point-the-bit rotary steerable system directional assembly, the Voyager bit
established fastest ROP and lowest cost per foot records in category 1 and 3 well
profiles, in addition to setting the top six records in category 2 well profiles. Tremendous
success continued when the Voyager bit was run with point-the-bit rotary steerable
system directional assembly and set new ROP and cost per foot records in deviated
sections longer than 4,000 ft.

Compass Bit Delivers More than 1 Million Revolutions

BIT: 6-1/8" Roller Cone, CM24MRS, IADC 517
LOCATION: Saudi Arabia
RESULTS: Varel’s CM24MRS Compass bit drilled more than 1 million revolutions
horizontally through dolomitic limestone in the Shuaiba reservoir. Run on a 7/8 stage
motor w/1.5° bent, the bit drilled 3,355 ft in 95 hrs at an average ROP of 35 ft/hr
completing 1,174 krevs.

Over One Million Revolutions per Bit
BIT: 26" Roller Cone, ER04JMRS, IADC 415
LOCATION: Abu Dhabi
RESULTS: The 26" ER04JMRS continues to provide best-in-class performance by reliably
delivering more than 1,000 krevs per drill bit. Championing the lowest cost per foot
solution, this bit produces long runs to TD in rotary and motor applications.

Optimized Voyager Design Delivers Record Runs in Balling Formations

BIT: 17-1/2" PDC, VB416DGHX
LOCATION: Iraq
RESULTS: To overcome the balling claystone and marl of the Upper Fars formation
in the Buzurgan field in Eastern Iraq, this operator specified a 17-1/2" Voyager design
incorporating Varel’s unique oval PDC cutters, set on four blades. The efficient cutter
geometry and highly effective hydraulic regime helped power the VB416DGHX bit
to several new field performance records. Over the course of four runs in three wells,
the bit was run on both rotary and motor drives and drilled a total of 13,605 ft in
297 hrs, for an average penetration rate of 50 ft/hr After four runs of cost effective
drilling performance, the bit was retired from service with normal cutter wear and
no bit body erosion, even after close to 300 circulating hrs in hole.

High Roller Bit Achieves Revolution Milestone in Zakum Field

BIT: 17-1/2" Roller Cone, HR18JMRSV, IADC 445
LOCATION: Zakum Field, Abu Dhabi
RESULTS: Varel’s 17-1/2" High Roller HE18JMRSV was used to drill from Gachsaran
formation as a build-up section to the Rus formation. This run culminated with the
bit achieving 1,211,460 revolutions while drilling a total footage of 2,580 ft in 92 hrs
with an average ROP 28 ft/hr. The post-run grading analysis showed an excellent dull
grading of 1-1-WT-A-F-I-BU-HR. This bit performed exceptionally well, meeting the
operator’s desired footage according to the planned proposal for the well.

Varel Voyager Bit Helps Steer Kick-Off Performance to New Level

BIT: 12-1/4” PDC, V616DG1X
LOCATION: Kuwait
RESULTS: In the Rawdatain field of Kuwait, this Voyager bit was run with a directional
motor assembly to drill the kick-off section of the well. Building from vertical to
13° inclination at section TD, the bit drilled at an average ROP of 27 ft/hr, exceeding
the previous-best ROP performance.

Varel Voyager Sets Multiple Benchmarks in Horizontal Wells in UAE Fields

BIT: 8-1/2" PDC, V619DGX
LOCATION: Abu Dhabi, UAE
RESULTS: Varel’s 8-1/2" Voyager V619DGX bit was run with a rotary steerable system
and drilled the entire build section of one horizontal well in the Asab field, building angle
from 7 to 90° at the field’s fastest ROP to deliver the lowest cost per foot. In another field,
the V619DGX was run with point-the-bit a rotary steerable system, and drilled cumulative
footage of more than 8,500 ft in two directional wells, including the field’s longest build
up and horizontal section drilled in a single run to TD.

Varel Voyager Achieves Record ROP on Rotary Steerable System

BIT: 8-1/2” PDC, V616DG1X
LOCATION: Kuwait
RESULTS: Run in conjunction with a point-the-bit rotary steerable system, the
V616DG1X Voyager bit set a new benchmark ROP of 25 ft/hr in the Sabriya field.
This bit outperformed its competitors by achieving the fastest rate of penetration
to TD in the 8-1/2" hole section.

Voyager Bit on Rotary Steerable System Improves Fastest ROP by 40%

BIT: 6-1/8" PDC, V613DGX
LOCATION: Kuwait
RESULTS: This 6-1/8" Voyager was run with a point-the-bit rotary steerable system
on a directional well in Sabriya field. The bit drilled more than 3,000 ft to reach
TD, achieving an average ROP of 58.8 ft/hr to surpass the previous fastest rate of
penetration by 40%.

Raider Series Bit Drills Section to TD in One Run
BIT: 12-1/4” R716DGXU
LOCATION: Libya
RESULTS: Varel’s 12-1/4" R716DGXU Raider series bit, equipped with 16 mm Vulcan cutters,
successfully drilled 3,085 ft, including cement and float equipment, through transitional forma-
tions containing shale, sandstones, limestone, and multiple layers of dolomites (Dembaba,
Assdjefar, Mrar, and Mrar shale formations). The performance report recorded an average ROP
of 35 ft/hr and the bit was graded as 2-2-NO-A-X-I-NO-TD upon post-run inspection, qualify-
ing the bit for additional use in upcoming wells. In sharp contrast, a comparable offset in the
area utilized three separate drill bits to complete this section in four runs – with basic calcula-
tions, Varel was able to rationalize a savings of approximately $37 USD /ft, totaling more than
$108,000 USD to the customer with this single bit.

Raider Series Bit with Advanced Vulcan Class Cutters Achieves Field
Record Footage and ROP
BIT: 12-1/4" PDC, R616PDG
LOCATION: Egypt
RESULTS: The R616PDG Raider design, equipped with Vulcan Class PDC cutters
set a new performance record in the Won field, drilling the longest section to date.
The six-bladed design cut through more than 3,400 ft of abrasive sandstone and
attained an average ROP of 42 ft/hr - also an area record. Post run inspection
noted a very good dull with a final grade of 1-1-WT.

Steerable Design Delivers Single-Run Directional Performance

In Complex Profile
BIT: 8-1/2" PDC, V616DG1XU
LOCATION: Qatar
RESULTS: In the Idd El Shargi field of Qatar, Varel’s highly steerable Voyager design was
selected to drill a challenging directional profile comprising a build-up from 70° to 90°
inclination with a 105° change in azimuth; followed by a horizontal section to TD. The
8-1/2" Voyager bit was run with a point-the-bit Rotary Steerable System + Motor to drill
the complex profile through the Lower Anhydrite and Arab formations. In a single run,
this assembly drilled more than 2,900 ft to section TD, achieving a maximum build
rate of 8°/100 ft and an average ROP of 140 ft/hr to achieve all directional and drilling
performance objectives. When pulled, the bit was graded re-runnable and subsequently
delivered additional value to this customer’s drilling operations.

Voyager Series PDC Bit Accumulates Record Footage and ROP Record

LOCATION: Egypt
RESULTS: Run on a motor, Varel's Voyager V616DGX PDC bit drilled the longest
interval in the Rahma field at the fastest ROP. The bit drilled 2,883 ft at 67 ft/hr and
ultimately drilled a cumulative footage of 5,582 ft with an average ROP of 63 ft/hr.

RESULTS: When the hardest and most abrasive formations must be drilled, Varel’s

bits deliver the highest penetration rates to section TD. Available with pin-up or box-up
connections, Varel’s Impregnated bits are designed with gauge characteristics tailored
to the drive system used, so when a Varel Impregnated bit was run on with turbine to
tackle the tough Devonian sandstone of Algeria’s Berkine Basin, performance exceeded
the best runs of the established competitor to set a new benchmark.
