    Louis Braille was a French man who lost his sight at age 3 and invented a tactile writing system for blind people called Braille. He was inspired by an existing military code called night writing, which used patterns of raised dots. At age 15, he simplified the system to use 6 dots instead of 12. By 1829 he had introduced his new Braille system at the school for blind children in Paris. Though he died young from tuberculosis, his system became widely used around the world for reading and writing by blind individuals.
