It is very pleasing to us that we completed a term paper on
Retail Management. Every assignment adds a new experience and riches the
knowledge. Our first assignment was denied and it entailed the second
endeavor & hardship. However, it is true that it also entailed the quality
task. We pay our due respect and exclusive thanks to our honorable course
teacher Mrs. Cristina who gave us the opportunity to elicit the quality
performance from us. We tried our best, although we had to face some
academic and time constraints.

INTRODUCTION
Tesco is Britain’s leading retailer. They are one of the top three retailers in the
world, operating over 3,700 stores globally and employing over 440,000
people. Tesco operates in 13 countries outside the UK – Republic of Ireland,
Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Turkey, and Poland in Europe; China, Japan,
Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand and India in Asia, and the U.S.
Everyday life keeps changing and the Tesco team excels at responding to those
changes. Tesco has grown from a market stall, set up by Jack Cohen in 1919.
The name Tesco first appeared above a shop in Edgware in 1929 and since
then the company has grown and developed, responding to new opportunities
and pioneering in many innovations.
By the early 1990s, they faced strong competition and needed a new strategy.
They are good at buying and selling goods but had begun to forget the
customers. Sir Terry Leahy, who became Chief Executive in 1997, asked
customers the simple question - “what are we doing wrong?". They then
invested in the things that matter to customers. For example, we launched
their loyalty scheme Club card and Tesco.com, our internet home shopping
service.
6
Going the extra mile for customers has been key to our growth.
We want to make customers' lives easier and better in any way we can. We
want to appeal to customers and give them a reason to come back to Tesco.
They have five different store formats, each tailored to our customers' needs.
Their Express stores offer customers great value, quality and fresh
food close to where they live and work. They sell a range of products including fresh
produce, wines, and spirits, and they have an in-store bakery.
Their Metro stores bring the convenience of Tesco to town and city
centre locations. Metros cater for thousands of busy customers each week and offer a
tailored range of mainly food products, including ready-meals and sandwiches.
7
Their Extra stores offer the widest range of food and
non-food lines, ranging from electrical equipment to bedding and cookware, clothing,
health and beauty and seasonal items such as garden furniture.
Everyone is welcome
Tesco aim is to reflect the communities they serve and mirror the workforce that they
recruit from. They try to make sure everyone can work in a way that suits their
circumstances.
They support flexible working, offering part-time roles, and encouraging job-sharing
opportunities and shift swapping where possible.
8
Everyone who works here is encouraged to broaden their experience
and work in different areas of the company. They want ambitious people to progress and
encourage them to do so.
As part of Every Little Helps our commitment to their people is that, they will give them
the opportunity to get on so that they are able to get the training and support they need
to do our job and to develop their careers at Tesco.
There are number of ways our people can achieve this, through participating on an
Options Development Programme, training for an Apprenticeship or studying for a
qualification whilst at work.
They also use Talent Planning to identify and fill our vacancies, with over 12,000 of our
managers having annual discussions regarding their development and potential. That is
why over 80% of our management positions are recruited from within.
For example, back in 1979, Sir Terry Leahy, our current Chief Executive joined as a
management trainee.
9
At Tesco, they like to ensure our staffs cared for financially. Therefore,
whether you have been with us 3 months or 3 years they run three successful share
schemes, all helping you end up with more cash in your pocket.
Shares in Success
So, to thank their people for the success they've brought the business, they give free
shares to everyone who's worked here for one year at the end of the financial year
(February). They share a proportion of our profit amongst our staff, based on salaries.
These Tesco shares are held in trust for 5 years, and after that, they can take them, tax-
free.
Save As We Earn
Every October those people who have been here a year get the option to save up to £50
every 4 weeks for either 3 or 5 years and receive a tax-free bonus at the end. we can use
our savings and bonus to buy Tesco shares at up to 20% less than the market price, or
take the cash.
10
Buy As We Earn
After three months, working with us we will have the chance to join the BAYE scheme.
We buy shares at the market price every 4 weeks, saving tax and National Insurance on
the salary you use to do this. We can start, stop or change the amount we invest at any
time. In addition, if we keep the shares in trust for 5 years we will get even more tax
advantages
Benefits
Staff Privilegecard
To reward you for our loyalty, after a year working at Tesco we will be given your
Privilege card - the staff loyalty card that gives us 10% discount and Club card points on
most Tesco products.
And eligible staff also have access to exclusive staff discounts with Tesco Personal
Finance and Tesco Telecoms.
11
Pension
None of us know what the future holds, but you can be sure that peace of mind and
financial security for their staff is very important to us. Planning ahead to their
retirement is easy with their award winning, Tesco pension scheme.
With a Tesco pension you are able to understand how financially secure you will be when
we decide to retire. As well as pension provision we have access to a life assurance
scheme that will provide financial protection for our family.
Their staff work hard, so we believe they should be able to make the most of their leisure
time. To help with this they have negotiated discounts and special offers that are
available exclusively to Tesco staff.
There are discounts on theme parks, holidays and gym membership that are available all
year round. There are also special offers throughout the year, to make sure there's
always something for everyone.
12
QUICK PROMOTION
We can get quick promotion from Tesco easily. If a employee working hard and have a
good skills he can be easily get promotion from his post. This is great opportunity for a
staff. This also a opportunity to increase the pay rate.
Job security
They recognise that Tesco staff has busy lives outside of the workplace, so they have
introduced a range of policies that will help you find a better balance between our work
life and home life.
From saving money with childcare vouchers to taking time off work for a career break or
extended holiday, at Tesco there is a variety of options available to support our lifestyle.
A staff will never sack from Tesco if he does not do any conviction. After three
months, an employee will be permanent. Therefore, it is a risk free job. So we are
secured in job place.

Essential skills
It's about making sure their customers always get the great service they've come to
expect from them - at the same time guaranteeing you never feel thrown in at the deep
end. It's just not the way we work.
Living Service
All of their store managers go through their Stores Leadership Programme. This is a
course designed to provide technical training, refresh operating skills and deliver Every
Little Helps for their customers, people and operations. Store managers learn to be more
personally effective, deliver simpler replenishment processes, and ensure the team
works effectively to maximise productivity.
14
To complement this, Living Service is based around their core values of
'No-one tries harder for customers' and 'Treat people how they like to be treated'. The
feedback they have had shows the programme helps their staff releases more of their
energy, potential and talent - and enjoy their job more.
Essential thing
We will learn from Tesco customer relationship, using the till, do the delivery and lots of
important thing. These all the things are needs for our better future and this is the
essential thing for all of the business.
I will also learn the official work managing the people, motivating the people.
