Computer addiction can take several forms, including gaming addiction and social media addiction. Gaming addiction involves compulsive gaming that interferes with daily life, while social media addiction stems from using social media to fulfill social needs but being dissatisfied. Computer addiction can be overcome by limiting computer use, only using computers for necessary tasks, keeping a computer usage diary, and creating a behavior modification plan. Computer addiction is linked to mental health issues like depression and has consequences such as lack of in-person social interaction and computer vision syndrome.

Computer Addiction

Definition

Computer addiction is a form of behavioral addiction that can be described as the excessive or
compulsive use of the computer which persists despite serious negative consequences for personal,
social, or occupational function.

Types or Classification of Computer Addiction

Gaming addiction: a hypothetical behavioral addiction characterized by excessive or compulsive use of

computer games or video games, which interferes with a person's everyday life.Video game addiction
may present itself as compulsive gaming, social isolation, mood swings, diminished imagination, and
hyper-focus on in-game achievements, to the exclusion of other events in life.[10][11]

Social media addiction: Data suggest that participants use social media to fulfill their social needs, but
are typically dissatisfied. Lonely individuals are drawn to the Internet for emotional support. This could
interfere with "real life socializing" by reducing face-to-face relationships. Some of these views are
summed up in an Atlantic article by Stephen Marche entitled Is Facebook Making Us Lonely?, in which
the author argues that social media provides more breadth, but not the depth of relationships that
humans require and that users begin to find it difficult to distinguish between the meaningful
relationships which we foster in the real world, and the numerous casual relationships that are formed
through social media.

Process (How to Overcome Computer Addiction)

1. Limit your time in computer- This may seem difficult at first, but it’s the first step to recovering from
computer addiction. Remember that you don’t need to stop using the computer altogether, just set
reasonable limits for now.

2.Only use the computer for necessary task- You may need a computer for work or for school. If this is
the case, use the computer as much as you need to for those particular applications. Otherwise, put it
away.

3. Limit where you can use the computer- Depending on the nature of your computer addiction, you
may benefit from limiting where you use the computer. For example, if you only use the computer in a
public place, you may refrain from behaviors that are easier to do in private, such as cybersex, online
gambling, or watching movies.

4. Keep a computer usage diary- Write down the dates, times, and duration of your computer usage.
Also write down the way you were feeling before, during and after each session of computer use.
5. Create a plan for modifying your behavior- Overcoming an addiction isn’t easy, and it requires a plan.
You may try a simple plan, such as quitting cold turkey; however, it’s more likely that a slower, more
methodical plan will be successful for computer addiction.

Comparison and Contrast between Computer Addict and Normal.

If you are a computer addict you can't control yourself using computer and you just keep playing or
using computer. If you are a normal person likewise, you are the opposite to it because you can
control yourself using computer or you can limit yourself using computers.

Cause and Effect

Researchers link internet/computer addiction with existing mental health issues, most notably
depression. Studies showed that the majority of those who met the requirements of
internet/computer addiction suffered from interpersonal difficulties and stress and that those
addicted to online games specifically responded that they hoped to avoid reality.

There are many consequences resulting from computer addiction. For example, excessive computer
use may result in lack of face to face social interaction. It may also lead to Computer Vision Syndrome
(CVS), a condition that results in headaches, blurred vision, neck pain, fatigue, eye strain, dry eyes,
irritated eyes, double vision, vertigo or dizziness.

Narration about Computer Addiction

Hi, I’m Ryan. I’m 19. I’m addicted to information technology and gaming, so that’s any form of
electronic gaming or the pursuit of information without purpose. I’ve always been interested in video
games, from a very young age. It never really started to get bad for me until middle school and into high
school. As time progressed, it just continued to get worse and worse. It started to affect my school
grades, interpersonal relationships, and things of that nature. Then I went off to college, planning on
being very successful, and that’s when my gaming addiction kicked in. Towards the end of my first
quarter, it got really bad. In my second quarter, I didn’t go to any classes. I just spent the entire time on
the computer.

My lowest point was when I realized what I had been doing, that I was on the track to flunk out of
college. This would result in me being homeless because my parents had said they wouldn’t support
me if I didn’t succeed in college. At that point, I just decided something had to change.

People don’t take internet addiction seriously at all, and it’s extremely hard to have it accepted. I’m in
a program called The reSTART Internet and Technology Recovery Program. You have to go to 12-step
meetings and talk to people in your recovery group, and even other recovering addicts don’t accept it
as a problem. Internet addiction is becoming more commonly accepted, but there’s still a huge
culture of ‘It’s not a problem, just turn off the computer’ sort of mentality. It’s not that simple.
It’s the same with an alcoholic. You can set down the drink and never pick it up again, and that’s just
the boundary that you need to have. With a behavioral addiction, like the internet addiction and food
addiction, you have to engage in those behaviors in some way, shape, or form. For me, I’m currently
working through a program where they help, walk over, and guide you to you reconnect into society
with those technology aspects.
