Unit 4: Gadgets
Unit 4: Gadgets

1. Future simple and

progressive

2. vocabulary: gadgets and

technology & linking
words
WILL:
Will is used to express: opinion, promise,
belief, threaten about the future. That is
why 'WILL’ often follows expressions such
as: 'I hope...', 'Do you think...', etc.

Examples
"Do you think she will like these flowers?“
“I hope this quarantine will end soon”

BE GOING TO:
Going to is used to talk about real facts or
plans in the future.

Examples
"Look at those clouds! It's going to rain!“
“I’m going to visit in Spain in July, I
already bought the tickets.”
Explanation:
The future progressive is used to describe
continuous actions or states that will
happen in a specific future time or during
a specific period in the future.

We don’t generally use the future

progressive to talk about personal
characteristics (to have red hair, etc.) or
mental/physical temporary conditions (to
be happy/ill/tired, to have a headache,
etc).
Examples
"She'll be lying in the sun this time
tomorrow.”
"I won’t be working late next week, I
promise."
"We'll be staying at the Star Hotel from
May 1st to May 10th."
We often find 'WILL' and ‘BE GOING
TO' in the same conversation.

In the following dialogue, the

patient wants a definitive answer,
but the nurse answers only with a
promise:
- Is this injection going to hurt?"
- Don't worry, it will only hurt a little and it won't
take long!
However, there are some
differences between WILL vs
BE GOING TO. Let’s take a
look at them.
And now, let’s take a look at the difference between
the future simple and the future progressive

Future progressive

Past Present Future a. Predictions about the future a. Action which will be in
with verbs like think, believe, progress at a stated time in the
expect, etc. future

X happen in the future as a result
c. Promises, threats, requests, of a routine or arrangement

definite plans

• will [won’t] + simple verb

to + simple verb
A: How is Paula doing? Is she going to travel with us next summer?
She said so.

B: I don’t think so. She will be working a lot in summer, she just got a
good job.

In this short dialogue, they ask about a
