THE FUNCTIONS AND IMPORTANCE OF FREE PRESS

IN A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY

Freedom refers to the state of liberty, or right and privileged to speak and

act according to one’s own will. Press and media (print, electronic and
online) are the most important medium of expressing opinion of the people
in a democratic country that justifies one’s individual right to speech and
expression, a coveted right enshrined in the Indian constitution and in the
constitution of other countries on the globe.

India is a democratic country. The Indian constitution guarantees

the “freedom of speech and expression”as a fundamental right of every
citizen of India.

Freedom of the press and media is very important. A press or news-media

enjoys greater freedom in a democratic country. It carries with it the
freedom and responsibility to discuss, question, and challenge actions and
utterances of government, public and private institutions. Journalists uphold
the right to speak unpopular opinions and the privilege to agree with the
majority. Freedom of press belongs to the people. The press and digital
media work day and night to deliver accurate news at the speed of the light.
The people of the country are kept informed of what is happening in the
country. Thus, freedom of press and media is the necessary pre-condition
to the fulfillment of democratic ideologies.

The press plays a very positive and constructive role in a democracy. It

keeps the people informed of the national and international news and
happenings. It brings to the notice of people the programmes, policies and
activities of the government. Similarly, it keeps the Government in the know
of the people’s problems, difficulties, hopes and aspirations. Thus the press
plays a dual role. It serves as a bridge between the Government on the one
hand and the people on the other.

The primary duty of the press is objective reporting of the news and views
in a calm and dispassionate manner. Sometimes certain newspapers
indulge in ‘Yellow Journalism.” They give out biased and coloured news.
Their aim is simply to indulge in sensationalism. Sometimes they also
spread rumours. They go to the extent of indulging in character
assassination, mudslinging and blackmailing. These activities are against
journalistic ethics.

The press should never shirk from its responsibility. It should always act
like an impartial judge. It should criticise the Government for its acts of
omission and commission and pat its back for any worthwhile achievement.
The press should not be scared of influential people. The press should
consider it their duty to protect the right of the workers and other
downtrodden sections of the people.

While the press should enjoy freedom to perform its role effectively, it
should not treat such freedom as a licence to defame anybody. It should
not publish any views or support any movement which violates our
Constitution or is against the territorial integrity and unity of the country.

Freedom is important, so is responsibility. In countries like India, the media

have a responsibility to fight backward ideas such as casteism, corruption
and communalism, and help the people fight poverty and other social evils.
