Mendoza, Cedrick C. ACTCY31S1: Case 1

The document contains two cases regarding predictions based on surveys and data. [Case 1] A survey of television viewers to predict the winner of a basketball championship is summarized as not being enough to reliably predict the outcome, as surveys are merely predictions that may or may not occur and other factors could influence the actual results. [Case 2] An elementary school that increased hours and saw a 10% improvement on student assessments is said to prove that longer school hours improves performance, as there is data showing the relationship between increased time and higher performance.

Instructions: Read the following case then answer the case questions below.

Case 1
UAAP sports program conducts a poll to the viewers to see which team
will win the UAAP Men's Basketball League in 2020  championship. Viewers  will vote
via SMS to the number displayed on the television screen and text  which team they
think will win. Do you think the responses of the viewers to the poll is enough to predict
who will become the champion?Yes or No and Why?

Case 2
An elementary school increased the length of the school hours per day
from 6.5 to 7.5 hours. Students who want to attend are required to sign contracts that
they will promise to give their best effort on their school work and to obey the school
rules; if they did not wish to do so, they could attend another elementary school in the
city. At the end of school year, student performance on assessments increased by 10%
compared last year. Does this improvement prove that a longer school hours improves
student performance?Yes or No and Why?

Answers:

Case 1
No, it is not enough to predict who would become the next champion.
What had been done is just a mere prediction that might or might not happen. There’s
always a probability that the results are not good enough to conclude who will win or
who won’t. Although there are power rankings before the start of the season that can be
used in order to assess each team’s individual and team capabilities, their superiority
above each other; there are other external and internal factors that could affect the end
result of things.
Case 2
Yes because there is a data proving that the relationship of the length of
the time in an elementary school increased the performance of the students.
