CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

In the old system here in our county, high school education consisted
of the first year up to the fourth year. Today, those four years correspond to
Grades 7 to 10, otherwise known as junior high school or JHS. It should be
noted that currently “senior high” no longer just means the very last year of
high school but rather, the two grade levels after it. Likewise, “junior high”
also does not just mean the year before the last of high school but rather
the four grade levels under senior high. Senior High School (SHS) covers the
last two years of the K to 12 program and includes 11 and 12. In SHS,
Students will go through a core curriculum and subjects under a track of
their choice.

Senior High School is two years of specialized upper secondary

education; students may choose a specialization based on aptitude,
interests, and school capacity. The choice of career track will define the
content of the subjects a student will take in Grades 11 and 12. Each
student in Senior High School can choose among three tracks: Academic;
Technical-Vocational-Livelihood; and Sports and Arts, but this study only
focuses on the strand that belong to Academic Track. The Academic track
includes four strands: General Academic Strand (GAS); Accountancy and
Business Management (ABM); Humanities and Social Science (HUMMS); and
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

There are total of 5,965 public schools, operate and are funded by
DepEd, offering grade 11 in 2016 and grade 12 in 2017. These public
schools utilize new classrooms and facilities constructed under the 2014,
2015 and 2016 budgets of DepEd or other fund sources, or use available
facilities for Senior High School.

In addition, 4,711 private high schools, private and public universities

and colleges, technical – vocational schools, and Philippine schools overseas
are offering grade 11 in 2016 and Grade 12 in 2017. An additional 101
schools will be offering Grade 11 in 2017 and Grade 12 in 2018. In total,
there are 4,830 private high schools, private and public universities and

colleges, technical-vocational schools, and Philippine schools overseas

approved to offer the Senior High School Program

There are different factors that affect their chosen strand in Senior
High. Respect for family is one of the most influential factors that affects
the Senior students for their career decision. Family factor tend to be
superior about choosing a course for their children to continue the legacy of
their family courses or profession.

Economic factors include by means of choosing their strand. Their

status in life can affect the chosen course they want, some of the
respondents will depend on the economic status to get their profession. It
may affect also themselves because not everyone tends to choose what
strand they afford because there are lots of option or choice of what they
really want. But because of life status, it plots on the strand where they
are belonging.

Self – interest is getting what they really want, they will decide on
their own profession where the passion brought them, this will affect their
chosen strand because some students are depending to what their parents
want them to take. Students grew up with parents, some are superior with
their guardians but mostly the parents dictate what profession they will take.

Peer Group is also considered one of the factors. Students are most
likely dependable of what society they have or the group they belong. It can
affect their perception to choose what they really want. It can encourage
one person to another, for becoming dependable for the group. Some
students vanish their own perception just to obey the rules and choose their
group. Sometimes, they seek the right path but most regret occurs.

However, the Department of Education developed the National Career

Assessment Examination (NCAE). NCAE is an aptitude test geared toward
providing information through test results for self-assessment, career
awareness and career guidance of junior high school students of the K to 12
Basic Education Program (BEP).

Statement of the Problem

This study will be conducted to establish information on the different

factors that affecting the decision-making of the Senior High School students
of ACLC Marikina in choosing their strand.

Research questions will be raised by the researchers and specifically,

will seek the answers to the following questions.

General Research Question:

1. What is the importance of studying the factors to consider in

choosing Senior Highschool strands?

This study is important because the researchers believe that some

of all people in the Philippines especially those students are aiming or
dreaming to be rich without even thinking how can they will be rich.
This study will guide them to properly decide which strand they should
take and what is the greatest factor they must consider the most.

Specific Research Question:

1. What is the reason why did choose that strand of yours?

2. How did you came up with taking that strand?

3. What is your parents’ side comments about the strand you’ve

chose?

4. What is your plans after taking your chosen strand?

5. What do you think your college life would be after taking that
strand?

6. What do you like about that strand?

7. What is the greatest factor that affected you in choosing that strand
of yours?

8. What is the biggest problem that you encountered while choosing

your strand?

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Introduction

A career choice is important because it determines your success in the

next stages of your life. (PAMS, n.d)

Many factors affect career choices of highschool students. Identifying

these factors would give parents, educators and industry an idea as to where
students place most of their trust in career selection process. (Super’s 1990)

In previous studies, the “difficulties for previous grade 10 students in

choosing their strands because of many factors to consider” has not given
enough attention.

Theoretical Framework

DEVELOPMENTAL THEORY OF CAREER DEVELOPMENT

According to Super’s (1990) Developmental Theory of Career

Development, high school students are at the exploration stage of career
development, whichinvolves crystallizing and specifying their occupational
preferences, while alsomaking preliminary decisions about their career
choice. The review of the literature showed the areas of a student’s life
affect the plans, decisions, and career choice they make: Gender, Parental
Influence, and Peer Influence. The study attempted to identify and
differentiate to what extent these factors played varying roles in future
career choice.

Synthesis

Combining the previous studies related to this topic, almost all of them
involved the students’ choice of career. However, the thing that only this
study focused is the difficulties in choosing Senior Highschool strand because
of many factors to consider.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study will used the Grounded Theory as research design.

Grounded theory is a systematic procedure of data analysis, typically
associated with qualitative research, that allows researchers to develop a
theory that explains a specific phenomenon. Grounded theory was developed
by Glaser and Strauss and is used to conceptualize phenomenon using
research; grounded theory is not seen as a descriptive method and
originates from sociology. The unit of analysis in grounded theory is a
specific phenomenon or incident, not individual behaviors. The primary data
collection method is through interviews of approximately 20 – 30
participants or until data achieves saturation.

Context and Participants

The particpants of this study will be ten (10) selected grade 11

students in ACLC College of Marikina located at Unit 17 Gunting Street
Brgy. San Roque, Marikina City. These students will be organized randomly.

Research Instruments

This study will used an interview and observation guide but the most
important and the main instrument for this study is the researchers
themselves. The researchers that will observe, take notes, talk to people,
conduct interview etc.

Data Collection

Data collection is defined as the “process of gathering and measuring

information on variables of interest, in an established systematic fashion
Unit 17, Thaddeus Arcade, Gunting St. Midtown II San Roque, Marikina City

that enables one to answer queries, stated research questions, test

hypotheses, and evaluate outcomes.” There are different methods in data
collection but in this study the method that will be used is the “Open-Ended
Surveys and Questionnaires”. The Open-Ended Surveys and Questionnaires
allow the respondents much more freedom and flexibility when providing
their answers.

Data analysis

Since this study is a qualitative research, the data that will be

analyzed, transcribed, and examined will came from the interviews
and observations of the researchers.
