ABRASION VALUE OF AGGREGATE

It is resistance of aggregate to wear. It is often considered to know the suitability of

aggregate is to be made for concretes to be used for wearing surfaces such as floors, road
pavement, runways etc.

Use of Los Angeles abrasion testing machine gives better realistic picture of the abrasion
resistance of the aggregate.

Object: To find the abrasion value of aggregate.

References: - Specification as per IS: 383

Method of test IS: 2386 (Part IV), IS: 2386 (Part I )

Apparatus:-
Los Angles abrasion testing machine, IS Sieve of size – 1.7mm, Abrasive charge - cast
iron or steel spheres approximately 48mm dia. and each weighing between 390 to 445g ,Oven.

Sample Preparation:-
The test sample should consist of clean aggregates which has been dried in an oven at 105oC to
110oC to a substantially constant weight and should conform to one of the grading shown in the
table below:
Procedure:-

1. n
2. For grading A, B, C and D, the machine shall be rotated for 500 revolutions; for grading
E, F and G, it shall be rotated for 1000 revolutions.
3. The machine shall be so driven and so counter-balanced as to maintain a substantially
uniform peripheral speed. If an angle is used as the shelf, the machine shall be rotated in such a
direction that the charge is caught on the outside surface of the angle.

4. At the completion of the test, the material shall be discharged from the machine and a
preliminary separation of the sample made on a sieve coarser than the l-70-mm IS Sieve. The
finer portion shall then be sieved on a 1.70-mm IS Sieve in the manner described in 2.3 of Part I
of this standard.
No of spheres fixed as per grade given below.

5. After the revolutions the sample shall be sieved through 1.7 mm sieve and coarser material
shall be washed & oven dried at 105 to 110°c and weight is taken (A).
Observation Table :

A Total weight taken in mould in ‘gm’ = A

B Weight of material retained on IS sieve 1.7 mm in ‘gm’ = B
C Weight of material passing through IS sieve 1.7 mm in ‘gm’ C = =A – B
D Weight of material passing Abrasion % = C/A X100 =

Calculation:-

5000− A
ABRASION VALUE=
5000

Acceptance Criteria:-
As per IS 383 Abrasion value shall not be more than 30 % for wearing surfaces &shall
not be more than 50 % non -wearing surfaces.
