HELLO, LOVE, GOODBYE

I.BACKGROUND OF THE FILM

The movie “Hello, Love, Goodbye” is a 2019 romance drama starred by Kathryn
Bernardo and Alden Richards; directed by Cathy Garcia Molina where in it took place in Hong
Kong and Philippines. Casting also the different stars such as Maymay Entrata, Maricel Laxa,
Jameson Blake, Kakai Bautista, Joross Gamboa and Lito Pimentel. The said movie, aside from its
theme of romantic drama, also has a goal to show the reality of an Overseas Filipino Worker
(OFW) as Bernardo played the role of being a domestic helper and bartender for Richards.

It is a new taste for the casted actors as they worked together for the first time especially
in the case of Bernardo and Richards. And onn the same time, it is a new kick as the commonly
produced movie of Mollina is merely focused on romance and comedy but with the film of
“Hello, Love, Goodbye” it gives something educational such as nourishing the mind of viewers
what is the reality that the OFWs are facing once they are on the other country shredding their
blood, sweat, and tears just to feed their family.

II.BODY

The movie started on showing the life of Bernardo as a helper of a family in Hong Kong,
how she took sidelines of selling retailed items together with the other OFWs and being a
waitress of a bar, until she met Richards who was the bartender of the said bar, and from that
time, their love story began and showed how they dreamt of leaving the life of being an OFW
and finally having the life they planned for themselves.

Aside from the main focus of the movie which is the romantic relationship between the
two characters, it also showed how trading between countries happen. International trade, aside
from the definition of exchanging products with the other countries, it can be also in the form of
services of the people who travel from one country to another. And the said movie is the best
example of it as it showed how the two different cultures became interconnected with each other
and how these countries particularly the Hong Kong already accepted that the world is indeed
globalized and opened their doors to the different races, cultures, and standards.

On the other hand, it is also showed in the movie the reality of Filipino people on how
they struggle to the lapses of the Philippine economy. The country, being considered as one of
the members of the developing countries, is still lacking on offered works and services for the
Filipino to work within the country; and with this fact, they lead to the decision on working
abroad to sustain their lives and loved ones.

III. ANALYSIS

In the movie, as portrayed by Bernardo having the role of a domestic helper, showed the
reality of OFWs experiencing maltreatment and discrimination in the other countries. It showed
the struggle of these Filipinos working abroad and how they sacrifice themselves just to have
enough money to feed their family residing in the Philippines.

“Bayanihan” is also one of the values curated in the movie, as it showed the culture of
the Filipino people that helping each other does not need to limit on blood-lines but simple as the
national identity is enough to treat someone like a family, just like what was portrayed in the
movie where in Bernardo surpass the challenges with the help of her co-OFWs. Indeed, Filipinos
are loving at all cost!

On the other hand, it is also highlighted in the movie how the OFWs are indeed important
for the development of the Philippine economy. But who are the OFWs? They are the Filipino
workers residing abroad. And according to the International Labor Organization (ILO),
approximately, there are 11 million Filipino workers abroad. They are indeed one of the great
contributors to the Philippine economy as they provide 11% of the GDP (Gross Domestic
Product) thus, the country garnered the 4th spot as one of the highest recipient of inward
remittances having $ 28 Billion based on the data released of World Bank.

IV. CONCLUSION

The movie “Hello, Love, Goodbye” succeeded on entertaining its viewers and implying
the lesson that one’s dream should be put on top of the priority list before settling and having a
partner in life. On the other hand, it perfectly represented the brutal reality of OFW residing
abroad and how the other people must not discriminate nor make them suffer as the struggle and
sacrifices that they made are far from the things that a common person could have imagine just
to be able to provide something and sustain the lives of their loved ones. Lastly, it opened the
mind and heart of the people and removing the common misconception that OFW are having an
extravagant life.
Bernardo and Richards also succeeded on giving justice on the emotions of an OFW. It
can be noticed throughout the movie how they immersed themselves and let their emotions talk
to the viewers. It is truly evident in the movie how OFWs are indeed called as the “modern
heroes of the society”. From the fact that they forged their reality into showing to their families
in the Philippines that they are living in luxury but in reality, having the need to sacrifice their
spiritual, psychological, and physical aspect just to reach their desired income within the day.

Moreover, in the relations of international trading, the movie also succeeded on being an
example how the globalization works among the countries. Indeed, this current generation is
already opened for the interconnectedness with the other countries. With these fact, it will
definitely benefit not only the rich countries but also the developing ones such as the Philippines
on improving and sustaining their economy and eventually become an independent.

In conclusion, the said movie is an overall success as it does not only focused on one
aspect of life (romance) but it also nourished the mind of every individual who watched the
movie that it is the reality that our modern heroes needs to face. Aside from that, it also let the
viewers to notice that having someone especially you and your friends is indeed needed to face
the challenges of life. Lastly, the movie is also an amusing medium to enlighten to its viewers
the growing globalization that continues to dominate the world.
