Assignment 2: Group (50 marks)

Mass and Energy Balance (ECE3113)

1. 100 kmol/min of gas stream containing 31 kmol % ethane (C 2H6) and 69 kmol% methane
(CH4) is fed to a distillation column, where it is separated into an overhead product
containing 90 kmol % methane and a bottom product containing 98 kmol % ethane.
However, a customer wants to purchase a product contains 97 kmol % methane. To produce
this, the overhead product from the first column is fed to a second column. The overhead
from the second column is the desired product and contains 98 % of the methane in the feed
to this column, while the bottoms product from the second column is recycled to mix with
the fresh gas stream before feeding back to the first column.
= (98% of
methane
from feed
methane)

Calculate the unknown molar flow rates (n1, n3, n4, n5, n6) and unknown mole fractions
(x1, x6). (10 marks)

2. The reaction between ethylene and hydrogen bromide to form ethyl bromide is carried out in
a continuous reactor.

The product stream is analyzed and found to contain 51.7 mole% C 2H5Br and 17.3% HBr.
The feed to the reactor contains only ethylene and hydrogen bromide. If the molar feed
stream is 165 mol/s, find the limiting reactant, fractional conversion and the extent of
reaction.
(7 marks)

3. A natural gas contains 92 mole% methane, 5% ethane and 3% propane. If 100 kmol/h of this
fuel is to be burned completely with 25% excess oxygen. Write the balance chemical
equation for each of the gas reacted. Find the required air feed rate and calculate the molar
composition of the combustion products.
(13 marks)

4. An ideal gas mixture contains 35% helium, 20% methane and 45% nitrogen by volume at 2
atm absolute and 90oC. Calculate the density of the gas mixture in kg/m3 (10 marks)
5. A gas cylinder with volume of 2.5 m3 contains 56 kg of CO at T= 500K. Using the virial
equation of state truncated after the second term, determine the pressure of the gas at this
condition (atm) (10 marks)
