LEARNING MODULE II. (WEEK III & IV) TOPIC: MUSIC OF EAST ASIA -JAPAN AND KOREA
LEARNING COMPETENCIES
The learner shall be able to:
a) explain how the music of Japan and Korea, an East Asian country relates to its geography and culture;
b) demonstrates understanding of common musical characteristics of the region as well as unique characteristics of a
particular East Asian country; and
c) evaluate music and music performances applying knowledge of musical elements and style; (Dep-Ed MELCs
2020).
LEARNING PROCEDURES:
Preliminary Activity
1. Introduction
East Asia is composed of three big progressive countries such as Japan and Korea. These countries are rich
in culture which includes art, dance, music and theater. To know them better including their similarities
and differences in their culture, this quarter will give you a cultural tour of Japan and Korea.

Japan or Nippon which means “Land of the Rising Sun” is in Far East Asia. Japan is rich on folk songs and poetry
expressing various aspects of life. Through the years Japan borrowed materials and musical concepts from its neighboring
countries.
Shonyo is a classic Buddhist chant. This chant is recognizable because t is highly ornamented, often used bells or
chimes which later included other percussions, it is rhythmically free, and is sung unaccompanied in chorus.
The Noh Theater utilized and displayed the most sophisticated and thoroughly organized style of music. The
Scale system became popular after 1500. This was the time when pentatonic tones were summarized by Yosen or Hard
Music. Sen or Soft Mode summarized La Ti Do Mi Fa with semitones ½ intervals as pentatonic tones. This shows
innovation of the commonly used scale system RITSU and RYO before 1500, which both do not have semitones in their
pentatonic scale.
Gagaku is a classical music performed in the Japanese Imperial Court Ga means elegant and gaku means music.
Gagaku is therefore elegant and highly refined. It is usually divided into dance, instrumental and recitative music which is
categorized as pure Japanese, original foreign music and salbara. This was derived from China and has been preserved up
to this day.
Salbara originated from folk songs and ROEI is applied is applied to chant Chinese poem.
There are two modes of Japanese music—the yo-sen (hard mode) and in-sen (soft mode)
Kokufu- kabu is pure Japanese song dance accompanied with very ancient based instrumental music performed
at court ceremonies and shrine rites.
Bogaku pertains to music accompanied by dancing. Kangen is the orchestral music without vocal parts.
Komagaku is the music of Korean origin, and Togaku make up the original foreign music.
Heikekiwa is the use of lute accompaniment to narrations using stereotyped melodies expressing different
emotions and depicting certain situations.
Noh Theater
One Japanese classic theatre art is Noh. It is characterized by symbolism and refinement.
Noh is a refined theatrical music with intense presentation and is different from the opera. It carries a formal style
but is not truthful. The scenes are simple and informative. The theater is based on the concept of Buddhism and Zen.
Kabuki
Kabuki is the most popular traditional form of Japanese theatre. Kabuki stands for song, dance and music. It was
introduced in Kyoto through Okumi—a woman in the early 1600s. Okumi performed a new dance style which other
women followed suit.
J-POP
J-Pop is the abbreviation of Japanese popular music. It was derived from electronic rock, Eurobeat, fushion,
kayokyoku, newwave and technopop combined. Instruments used in J-Pop include bass guitar, drum machine, electric
guitar, sampler, synthesizer, and vocals.
MUSIC OF KOREA

Korea was given the name Choson which means “The Land of the Morning Calm. The ancient music of
Korea was fully developed in the 15th century. Despite the great influence from the Chinese and Japanese music,
Korean music remained distinct.
Chong-ak
The literary music of Korea generally relate to court. Classical music is very rare. The term Chong-ak
was taken from the word chong-dae, meaning “peace”. Aak to Korean music means elegant music. Chong-ak
means right music, and sog-ak means secular. The most popular chong-ak is “ Sujechon”
Nib’gan chong-ak is the other kind of chong -ak, and this played outside the court.
Chong-ak Vocal Forms
Kagok pertains to long lyrical song commonly sung by professional male or female singers. This is
usually accompanied by dulcimer, horizontal flutes, an hourglass drum called changgo, small oboe and zither.
Kasa is a long narrative song performed with accompaniment by a trained singer. An example of this is
“Sleeping Spring” also known as “Chunmyongok. Sijo is a short lyrical song similar in text and tone to kasa.
Changgo is used for accompaniment.
Sog-ak Vocal Forms
Sog-ak is a music that differs from Chong-ak because of its colorful melody, lovely rhythm, and is more
appealing to Korea’s common people. Sog-ak incorporate Buddhism and Shaman music, folksongs called
minyu, farmers music nong-ak song-drama known as p’ansori, and instrumental music called sanjo.
Nong-ak is a typical farmers’ music. This is accompanied by a dance through which they expressed their
joy and thanksgiving for a good long harvest. Minyu is sung by commoners and is ordinarily written in triple
meter. A popular example of this kind is “Arirang”.
Dance of Korea
In Korea, they have folk dance performed by farmers to assure good harvest. In this traditional dance,
the leader of the ribbon hat dancer spins a log ribbon farm his hat as he twirls. This dance is farmer Dance.
Koreans have ritual dances such as the Munmu or civil dance and the Mumu or spiritual dance. In
Munmu the dancers wear black hats with flute in both hands a wand to which feathers are attached symbolizing
prosperity and peace. The military dancers wear red hats and each holds a shield on the left hand and a hatchet
in the right hand. These symbolizes glorious achievement.
K-Pop
K-Pop stands for Korean popular music, a genre which started in South Korea. It is modern form of
South Korean pop music which consist of various audiovisual elements such as dance-pop, electronic, hip-hop,
pop, ballad, R&B rock and many more.

THE JAPANESE ARTS
Art in Japan covers a wide range of art styles and media, including ancient pottery, sculpture, ink painting and calligraphy
on silk and paper, uki woodblock prints, kirie, kirigami, origami and more recently manga- the modern Japanese cartoons,
along with many other types of works of art. Art is already a way of life among the Japanese. They are known in painting,
architecture, sculpture, origami or paper toys, and flower arrangement called ikebana, and bonsai or miniaturized plants.
Visual Arts

The Japanese visual arts reflect a variety of local and foreign traditions. The Shinto beliefs about the forces of
nature, Buddhist teachings about the impermanence of life and western styles have all played a role in shaping the arts of
Japan. Japanese art was greatly influenced by their religion. During the feudal period, many samurai adopted the values of
Zen emphasized simplicity, self-discipline. Zen emphasized in its teaching that beauty can be found in ordinary objects
and in daily tasks. Japanese traditions such as landscapes gardening, flower arranging, and the elaborate tea ceremony had
influenced of Zen ideas.
Architecture
Japanese architects demonstrated sensitive organization of clearly defined forms. A Japanese teahouse is built
like a Japanese farmhouse. It provides the appropriate setting for the tea ceremony, which embodies the attitudes of
simplicity, naturalness and humility that invade the entire palace grounds.
Japanese Painting
Japanese painting is unique in its own way and has a certain characteristic about it as well. This is also the oldest
art. This is a combination of traditional ideas and influences form the outside as well.
Painting is the preferred artistic expression in Japan. The Japanese wrote with a brush rather than a pen and their
familiarity with a brush technique has made them particularly sensitive to the values and aesthetic of painting. An
example of Japanese narrative painting can be seen in a series of images made to illustrate “The Tale of Genji”, often
called the first novel in world literature.
The art of woodcut printing became a new and popular art from Japan in 17 th century. The prints are called Ukiyo-
e, which means “floating world” Artist depicted scenes of daily life.
Ikebana
Ikebana is the flower arrangement in Japan observing the principle of heaven, man and earth. It is the art
arranging plants and flowers on a base which the primarily basis of the arrangement is the symbol of relationship in the
whole world. All ikebana arrangements are composed of irregular triangle.
There are different Ikebana styles of arrangements. Some of these are the following:
Seika or shoka, the living flowers
Rikka, standing flowers
Nageire flung flower styles when bowl-shaped vases are used for arrangement.
Moribana or piled up flower’s styles are used for dish container.
Bonsai
Bonsai is a Japanese art form. It utilizes horticultural technique along with artistic applications to cultivate
replicas of trees as they are found in nature. Bonsai trees are common in Japanese gardens. It is the art of cultivating
ornamental, artificially dwarfed shrubs and trees. Bonsai in literal translation means “plant in a tray”
Origami
Origami is an art of paper folding. It is made not only as toys or decorations, but also as a way to express
kindness, love, and friendship to someone and so this is a gift. Oregami is a Japanese culture that has existed since a
thousand years ago. Origami came from the Japanese words “Oru” meaning “to fold” and “kami” meaning “paper”.
Weaving
The Japanese also excel in the textile art. The brocades of the kimono, worn by actors of the Japanese Noh drama,
are admirable examples of silk weaving at its best.
Japanese Manga Drawing
Manga refers to modern Japanese cartoons. Mangga are comics created in Japan. Its medium includes works in a
broad range of genres: action-adventure, romance, sports and games, historical drama, comedy, science fiction and
fantasy, mystery, suspense, detective, horror, sexuality and business/commerce among others.
Ceramics
Simplicity also applied to the use of decorative devices and motifs and the intervention of the human hand is kept
to a minimum. Artist avoid the extremes in most type of their arts. You rarely see lines with extreme-straightness or
extreme-curves. Korean artist avoids all bold lines, sharp angles and steeply angled planes, as well as extreme colors.
Architecture
If you will look at Korean architecture, you will see a gently sloping variant as compared to the steeply curved
Chinese roof. In terms of overall impact, the effect of a piece of Koran art is usually gentle and mellow; lines are fluent
and the impression is one of subtle inner harmony.
Painting

If you will look at the history of Korean painting, it bounces back to the early murals painted on the walls of
tombs during the fourth century. It continues to the present since most Koreans artists keep the styles and forms of the
traditional artist alive.
Weaving
Out of wancho, a common reed found in Korea, people weave decorative pieces of art such as baskets, mats,
placemats and potholders. Wancho is usually found in rice paddies and swamp lands in Korea. It is described as smooth,
glossy, soft, durable and milky in color.

Football/Soccer
Soccer is the world’s most popular sport. Millions of people in more than 140 countries play soccer.
Soccer’s most famous international competition, the World Cup Championship is held every four years.
Soccer as it is played today, was developed in England during the 1800s and quickly spread in many
other countries. Until the mid-1900s, the game was not greatly popular in the United States. But today, it is one
of the nation’s fastest-growing sports.
In Great Britain and many other countries, soccer is also called football or association football. The
word soccer comes from “assoc” an abbreviation of association.
The Game and the Players.
The game of soccer is primarily a kicking game, so it is very necessary for all players to master the
technique of controlling the ball with the feet. Eleven (11) players make up the team and the game put in the
play by a place kick from the center of the field
Equipment

Basic Technique and Strategies.
Protection- stop the activity immediately and protect the injured part form additional damage
Rest- rest the area to give time for the injured tissues to heal
Ice- apply cold pressure (ice or ice pack wrapped in a thin towel) to the injured area to reduce
swelling and pain. Ice is a vaso-constrictor, causing the blood vessels to narrow and control
internal bleeding.
Compression- wrap the injured part with an elastic bandage or wrap immediately to prevent
much swelling.
Elevation- Elevate the injured area to reduce blood flow and swelling.

MEANING AND IMPORTANCE OF DATING, COURTSHIP AND MARRIAGE
Dating, a social relationship, provides a pleasant social experience for a boy and a girl with no commitment. It is a
way of getting to know each other which usually begins in groups.
Why go on a date? There are several reasons why people go on a date such as:
1. It provides companionship.
2. It gives you an opportunity to learn more about people and yourself.
3. It provides you an opportunity to practice being responsible and considerate.

4. It helps your social skills such as communication skills, decision-making skills, interpersonal skills and
others.
5. It helps you prepare for future relationships and probable marriage.
In dating, it is better to follow our parents’ guidelines such as:
1. Tell them your exact plans.
2. Follow the curfew set by your parents.
3. Follow established code of conduct set by your parents.
4. Establish the expected code of conduct for the person you date.
5. Inform your parents about the person with whom you will go on a date.
6. You have to arrange for safe transportation with your date when you go home.
Group Dating
Do you know that getting together this way helps build understanding the easy way? You will have the chance to
see, examine and compare thoughts, feelings and actions of your male and female friends. This type of dating will allow
you to choose people with good qualities.
When you go on group dating, remember some responsibilities. When your group go to a place used by others
such as fast-food chains or restaurant, movie house, and others, your group need to think about how your actions affect
others. Be considerate and respectful.
Courtship
Courtship is the period during which partners learn about each other. They start
appraising learn about each other and determine whether his or her partner has the traits
needed for a successful marriage. It is very important for a man or a woman to have an
opportunity to meet, be together and decide if they will continue their relationships or
not after knowing each other’s character. It is necessary that as man and woman
appraise each other during courtship, they should consider the following questions
below before deciding into a steadier relationship.
Marriage
The next step after courtship is marriage. The decision to get marry
should not be taken lightly. Kit means you should look closely at each other
before making a commitment. Marriage is the traditional committed relationship.
It is also a sacrament stressing the spirituality, rights and obligations of each other.
Commitment, compatibility and compromise are essential for a successful
marriage.
