    Inspection and Reconditioning of Main Bearing Pockets


    on Sole Plate of the PS-26 Engine
    DSE9103

    1. INSPECTION

    Before attempting any reconditioning work on


    the main bearing pockets, the following
    inspection measurements should be carried out.

    a. Apply crack detection spray on all main


    bearing pockets (see figure 1). Any cracks on
    these parts are NOT acceptable.

    b. Measure fitting surface on both sole plate


    (W1) and main bearing cap (W2) as seen on
    figure 2.

    Any measurements should be in the range:

    W1 = 290 mm 0 ~ +0.052

    W2 = 290 mm +0.08 ~ +0.10

    2. RECONDITIONING

    Before any machining of the bearing pockets


    takes place the bottom surface (A) of the sole
    plate should be planed as minimum (figure 3).
    This will serve as a reference plane for any
    further machining.

    Important Notice

    Rectification of a single bearing pocket is not


    Figure 2 acceptable practice. Always machine ALL
    bearing pockets at the same time.

    Reconditioning Procedure

    a. Machine surface (D) by h mm (figure 4).

    b. Machine surface (C) and (E) by h1 and h2


    mm respectively (figure 5) to reduce inner bore
    of main bearing pockets.

    machining limit: h = h1 = h2 < 2mm

    The above machining margin should be decided


    with consideration of the thickness of the shims
    on generator foundation, since realignment of
    engine and generator is very likely.

    c. Install bearing caps on sole plate engine
    frame. Tighten tie rods and jack bolts with
    regular torque (as if crankshaft was installed).

    d. Bore out all main bearing pockets with the


    same center and finish inner bore to original size
    and tolerances (figure 6).

    alignment between adjacent pockets: less


    than 0.03 mm
    alignment of all units : less than 0.06 mm

    inner bore diameter d = 235 mm (0 +0.029)

    roundness of bore < 0.02 mm/unit
