Centre Georges Pompidou 2020 ISBN 9782844268723 Acqn 30874
Hb 21x27cm 328pp col ills £45
Text in French

With more than 200 works and documents from the rich collection of the Musee national d'art
moderne as well as from major national and international collections, this exhibition retraces the
artist's career in chronological order, from his beginnings around 1890 to his contact with the
masters, during which he gradually developed his own pictorial language until the early 1950s.

The exhibition catalogue borrows the codes of the edition of Henri Matisse, a novel by Louis
Aragon, and is based on five essays and an extensive chronology / anthology illustrated and
enriched with numerous quotations and unpublished documents, in order to "build the novel" of
the painter Matisse and his work, in the manner of a biography. The monograph is completed by
a small booklet of reproductions from the magazine Verve, to which the artist actively contributed.

Henri Matisse was a major artist of the 20th century and studied all his life the use of colors and
the art of drawing. "I only thought of making my colors sing" said the painter. Matisse draws his
inspiration from his studio and everything that surrounds him: fish jar, plants and flowers, shells
and statuettes... without forgetting the light! Whether through drawing, painting or paper cut-outs,
he looks for the best way to make his emotion speak. For him, "to create is to express what one
has in oneself".

In this notebook, discover the inspirations of the painter, trace your self-portrait and color the
works of Matisse. Then, with the free BlinkBook application, transform this book into a cartoon to
find your coloring in Matisse's studio!

La Fabrique De L'Histoire De L'Art - 200 Revues 1903-1969

Centre Georges Pompidou 2020 ISBN 9782845978447 Acqn 31089
Pb 24x32cm 480pp col ills £59
Text in French

Transdisciplinary and international, the selection presented in this 480-page book was chosen
from the collection of the Kandinsky Library at the Centre Pompidou, which, with more than 8,000
titles, is one of the richest collections in the world. Only frequented by researchers or specialists,
this magnificent editorial corpus remains very little known. This is why the authors have chosen to
tell a subjective, lively and accessible history of art through 200 editorial adventures. The
challenge is to embody the diversity of registers: from the humorous virulence of Dada magazines
to the postcolonial verve of the Martinique magazine Tropiques d'Aime Cesaire to the energy of
Provoque, a journal of Japanese experimental photography.

In chronological order, the magazines are presented through facsimiles in their original format,
cover and inside pages, and according to three types of content: short and lively notices, focuses
to render exceptional editorial adventures, and contextual narratives to highlight the unique
biographical journeys of editors-passers. In this way, we can revive the intense ties of cultural
sociability that have lastingly shaped the history of art in the twentieth century.
