CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT

Time : 3 Hours ] [ Max. Marks : 60

Instructions to Candidates :—
(1) All questions are compulsory.
(2) Mobile phones are prohibited in examination hall.
(3) Due credit will be given to neatness and adequate dimensions.
(4) Assume suitable data wherever necessary.
(5) Illustrate your answers wherever necessary with the help of neat sketches.

1. (a) Draw a typical break even chart and explain different components.

(b) A small shopping complex can be constructed for Rs. 50,00,000.00. The
gross income for first year is estimated as Rs. 6,00,000.00 and is expected
to increase by Rs. 20,000.00 every year as arithmetic gradient. The annual
O and M costs and taxes average about 40% of gross income. The resale
value after 30 years is estimated as 1,00,00,000.00. Find rate of return
on this investment. 7 (CO 2)

2. (a) What is WBS ? Why is it prepared ? 3 (CO 3)


(b) Draw the network for the data given in table below. Compute event times,
total project duration and critical path. Also calculate total float for non
critical activities.

3. In a small project there are nine activities. The duration for each of these activities
and the labour required to do them are given in following table. The project must
be completed within 27 days.

4. Solve any Two :—

(a) What are different phases through which construction project passes ? Explain

(b) Execution of construction project is different than setting up a manufacturing
plant. Justify the statement with suitable example. 5 (CO 1)
(c) What types of organization exist in construction firms ? Explain their merits
and limitations. 5 (CO 1)

5. Solve any Two :—


(a) Discuss inspection, quality control and quality assurance in a construction
project. 5 (CO 4)
(b) What are different indices for measuring accident in construction sites ?
Calculate severity rate for a site where total 10 labours were working
for 30 days and in an incident two of them were injured. First labour
did not work for one day and second for 3 days. Assume missing data.

(c) Why safety is gaining such importance in present day construction scenario ?
Compare cost of accident to cost of safety. 5 (CO 4)
