A Suburb in Stockholm
Mahmoud Saiid

 Date: 1957
 Style: Expressionism
 Genre: landscape
 Dimensions: 60 x 81 cm

This painting describe a quiet suburb in Stockholm in winter as we see all the streets and houses are
covered with snow which is ordinary in European countries. And there's a pedestrian walking between
houses alone. And there no other people in streets. In the painting we found a balanced compositions
of buildings and a perfect use of perspective and a great use of white tints.
When looking at this painting we can feel the cold and remember the smell of cold days, also we can
feel the loneliness from predestine that walks alone. Maybe Mahmoud said remembered his days in
Paris and how was cold this days.
Mahmoud Saiid was greatly influenced by Egyptian personality in all its functions in this painting
we find him emphasizing the cold days in Sweden as he can't remember a sunny days in Europe
unlike his country.

The City

The painting visualize the Egyptian streets (Alexandria) as Mahmoud Saiid living. The painting project
a crowded street full of different people and animals and reflect the Egyptian spirit from the clothes and
traditions of Egyptians.

Egypt people in their distinctive uniforms so in this painting we notice the sun lifting its long shadow
before departing from the view, we see inside the painting different kinds of people and costumes that
are rare in Egypt at the present time, such as the ''arqasos seller''

Mahmoud saiid emphasizes the Egyptian identity in this painting He was the philosopher who observes
the people draws the soul and philosophy and records it in paintings that mix colours with meanings,
His paintings are a poetic document of Egyptian life.

The first thing that catches my eyes when looking at this painting is the faces of the people that are
similar to our faces and also ancient Egyptian faces that made us recognize ourselves again.

We can feel that the colors used in this painting are warm colors, components are dynamic, people walks
in groups that reflect the feeling of warmth in Egyptian cities unlike the first painting.

This artist adopted the issue of presenting Egyptian heritage, environment, and identity to the world
through his modern paintings.
