Anderson Janna. Many Tech Experts Say Digital Disruption Will Hurt Democracy.

February 21,2020, Pew Research Center. Accessed November 9 2020

hurt-democracy/

The use of technology will hurt democracy, the decline of journalism and surveillance

capitalism/press only sped up the process. Over time there has been a lot of debate about

technology, how it is used, and what it could do in the future, more people agree that technology

will weaken our core government system while fewer agree that it will not. A lot of the debate is

centered around trust, truth, and the system, as technology is good in many ways, it can also be

used for the wrong reason thus making these worries true. The two main themes that come

about are lined with the concern about humans adapting to the changes, good or bad, and the

worry that technology will be used for the wrong thing, for personal gain.

This source points out the concerns for the future concerning both technology and the

government and its systems, the understanding between both sides are present in this article.

It is important to add technology into the mix when talking about how the social network is

hurting us rather than helping, democracy and technology both have different sides which

makes it an ideal source to help with making a point about social networks.
Iniguez Gerardo, “Effects of deception in social networks”. 07 September 2014,

Accessed November 9 2020

Trust plays a role in the exchanging of information, deception only breaks down the trust that is

given, communicating is pretty much undermined through the use of deception. It is a tool used

by those who are looking to gain resources and money, trust reflects the cleaness of working

together, that cleanliness is withered away when the bond is broken thus the fitness, as it is

stated, is lost. There are four types of lying that are used most of the time, prosocial-lying to

protect, help or benefit, self-enhancement- lying to keep from embarrassment, selfish- protect

oneself from punishment or any after effects, and antisocial- Lying to hurt others. A white lie

may be beneficial for the person but there are other costs which take place during the time or

after that white lie has been made.

The sources go on the science side of lies, what types of lies and how they can affect a person

or a social network, I am able to look at the other side of lies, there are sides of lies that you

cannot see on the surface but it comes when you do the research.

A part of the distrust in the social networks are because of the lies, how can we ever learn to

trust someone or a network more specifically, if they keep giving us false information or biased

claims, the source helps in getting the research behind lies for my topic.

Getting to the Truth:Fake News, Libel Laws, and Enemies of the American People. Fake News

has been a term that has been in action for years, ever science the press was created, it is even

used today by figures that are representing us in the white house. The term fake news has been

used so lightly in the wrong context that it deserves a new name, as fake news means to create

stories that fool the audience, but today it is used as a tool for personal use.Fake news is rather

dangerous today compared to the past, the truth is rather blurred and democracies have the

hardest time when finding a way to solve this problem and put an end to it, anyone can be labeb

because of giving false information even if it was never the intent or purpose.

The article helps the readers understand the blur that everyone has to try to comprehend, as

there are different understandings of fake news, many rather accept the context given to them,

to be at fault as the article states it, rather than understand the truth.

It can be hard to identify fake news and actual fake news, as fake news is better to be referred

to as false information. The fake news I am referring to is the one that is used by politicians in

connection with the media to cover things up. This is one of the true natures of the press, really

understanding the term fake news clears a few things up about the press.
Oswald A. Kristine, “Mass Media and the Transformation of American Politics”. Marquette Law

Review, volume 77, issue 2, article 7, pg 386-387.

The mass media is completely controlled by the giant corporate cologerates that are

interested in money and value. Much of the news coverage we relieve comes from the Big

Media, the well known news/media stations, local newspapers have to follow and write what is

given to them, while many stories are ignored by editors until one of the Big Media covers it.

Many of these news stations will allow the viewers to be given to advertisements, in which many

like to be on a political note, there is the fear that the media will ignore the interest of the people

only to make money, so then it turns into creating for money rather than creating to inform. The

wealthy can pretty much control what is seen and what is not seen, as this is a fear, it is also a

truth, news is biased most of the time, it is impossible to have a balance as in journalism it's not

easy to not have any opinions in writing.

The article helps me to understand that the wealthy play a big part in what the viewers see and

what they cannot see, it is hard to accept or verify if something is the truth if the coverage is too

biased or one sided.

This source states a lot of truth that many of the wealthy people or the big media leaders ather

not hear. As coverage is stripped of its trueness it leaves the people without the needed

answers, while there are many people who accept it, another case of being controlled by the

media.

Harvard.https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2020/06/study-finds-political-bias-skews-

perceptions-of-verifiable-fact/. Accessed November 9 2020

Politics shape the perceptions of variable reality, people with different opposing political

viewpoints don't see issues the same way, the understanding of those issues are distorted

because of the aspect that no one can agree on the same thing. Political opinions are first

formed through or by external and internal sources or factors, as they do change over time, the

strive between democrats and republicans makes it harder to achieve true equality. One's

perception depends on their common knowledge, how much an opinion will change depends

solely on how much pressure the person puts on it. Many people do not want to believe the

truth, even if the information states it or clearly shows it.

The article highlights the diffusion that many people have when it comes to political views. My

understanding about the diffusion in political matters is the disagreements between the two

political groups.

My topic does involve the political field, what goes on in it and what makes people think the way

they do. Many people believe what they see from the media, press, or journalism, then they

stick to that belief. The source gives more insight at why people think a certain way in the

political area.

Everyone in today's time uses social media, age does not really matter in any sense as there

are younger and older people using social media on a daily basis, it has become one of

america's social norms. Social media does have its own effects on people using it, some are not

good while others are really beneficial, in reference to the brain, when someone receives a like

on a post they become really happy. There are different reasons why people post on social

media, it can be for family reasons, selfish reasons, and even the ideal that one needs to post

when something happens. Many people become addicted to social media, they wont stop and it

becomes more than a hobby, social media is seen as a social platform where you can share

your ideals or just share things for fun, it has many sides, the positive and negative.

This Article helps me understand just how much influence social media can have on a person, it

can even determine what actions they will take or how they view a certain thing or topic, and it

can be reasons such as fitting in or doing it because everyone else is doing it.

In relation to the true nature of journalism/Press/Media, social media is a major player in what

developed what is created from the Press. What motivates the press to post what they post?

Why does a journalist write what they write? really one of the answers can be found when you

take a deep look into social media.

Understanding Bias. American Press Institute.

https://www.americanpressinstitute.org/journalism-essentials/bias-objectivity/understanding-

bias/ accessed 11/6/2020

Bias is a term that is today seen as one sided, many journalists want to prove that they are

unbiased because of the public's outlook. What if the journalist accepted the bias in his reports,

it can be faster determined what to be put in and what to be left out if the journalist accepts the

truth in being biased. A bias can be the to beginning of investigative journalism, the media

would respond to it and make possible changes that would make the truth the truth, the bias

many people accept is related to government, there are thirteen different bias, the last one

mentioned is pack journalism, a modern term would be master narrative, to add a generalized

comment, like the president made poor decisions or he was just dumb. These narratives are the

key point in s journalist job, they can act as a trap to get to the bottom of things.

This source covers the good that Bias itself can bring, as many people view it in a negative

manner, I can better understand that the real problem of deceit is not necessarily from Bias

itself.

Putting it all together I never thought about putting Bias in a positive light although it in itself has

the ability to change a lot of things, in my topic Bias was one of the reasons to why social media

will hurt society but rather its how the bias is used so its the person who is the owner of that

bias.

June 1995 issue. https://hbr.org/1995/05/why-the-news-is-not-the-truth. Accessed November 9

2020

Why the News Is Not the Truth. The U.S press and the United States government are both

corrupt and troubled. The press fails at what it claims to do along with what we, as the citizens

expect them to do. The media is unable to really tell the truth behind to or crisis, they are

recreated or fabricated to the point of controlling the viewers point of view. The press had

worked together with the government more specifically politicians, only to make sure that the

*deficit* gets covered up, so that everything seems okay when in reality the problem only got

worse. Lying has unfortunately become a culture in the journalism/press area, really its a

problem, it goes to show just how much the press has gone off track.

The article dives into points that you won't normally find when doing independent surface level

research on the press/media.Knowing that the press has went behind everyones

Back by covering up information it only brings up more questions from me.

I am researching the nature/ or the reality of the press/media/ journalism, the topic is right on the

money and it will help me come up with more ideas needed to support my research. Having a

source that dives beyond just the news is not telling the truth, brings in some background

information.

Freedom of the Press:Challenge to this Pilliar of Democracy, “Is the news media still seen as a

pillar of Democracy”, a watchdog to the government from the people. The media in today's time

has a lot of distrust and blame, not everyone can really trust the media, as it was originally

indeed to be that way. Everyone can be a publisher on their own right and information on the

web is entered quickly, as where no one can really verify if the information is correct, the first

amendment created the gateway to this, where everyone has a voice.

Is the media doing their job, are they robbing us of our right to know the truth about the

government that is supposed to be protecting us. The article gives me a clearer view about what

the overall population believes, the questions that many of us think about.

The Press/Media has strayed away from its desired path, it's just as much a social problem as it

is a political problem, the way the media is now is not just because of political selfishness but

also the individual's actions. With technology growing it is easy to change or muplialite anything

so really it's more about who we can trust in reality, this source is a piece to the bigger puzzle.
