The Holy Gospel Mark 1:1-8
The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in the
prophet Isaiah, “See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your
way; the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make
his paths straight,’ John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism
of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean
countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized
by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s
hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He
proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy
to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he
will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Homily Fr. Ray Massenburg

Indwelling God, you have baptized your Church with the Holy Spirit: Inspire us to lead lives of
holiness and godliness as we prepare for the new heavens and a new earth, so that as Christ
comes he finds us to be a people of peace and justice.
Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
Holy and Mighty One, open the ears and eyes of the leaders of all the nations that they may
listen to what the Lord God is saying, for you are speaking peace to your faithful people and to
those who turn their hearts to you.
Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
Compassionate One, look upon the needs of all humanity: Feed your flock like a shepherd;
gather the lambs in your arms and carry them in your bosom, gently leading the mother sheep,
that all may know the comfort of your strength.
Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
Ever-present God, lift up your voice with power to herald good tidings to the people of this
community to cast out all fear as we listen for the happy cry of your coming salvation.
Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
Glorious One, come with might in your divine recompense to reveal your glory to all who look
to you in hope, as we pray especially for our sick and shut-in:
Accept our glad tidings for those who offer you their gracious thanksgivings, especially for ___.
Bring into your everlasting reign those who have died, especially ___.
Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
Look upon your creation and comfort your people, O Holy One: Let every valley be lifted up
and every mountain and hill be made low; let the uneven ground become level and the rough
places a plain, that all people may see the revelation of the glory of God, in the power of the
Holy Spirit, through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer
The Blessing
Comfort, O comfort to you, God's people. In your wilderness, prepare the way of the Lord, and
in your desert, make straight a highway for our God.
Greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer, for he is lifting every valley and
removing every mountain, and peace shall be a pathway for his feet.
You are baptized with the Holy Spirit. Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and
peace have kissed each other; truth springs from the earth and justice looks down from heaven.
Lift up your voice with strength, lift it up, do not fear.
And the peace of our gentle God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, be with you and comfort you,
now and forever. Amen.
