ISLAMIC STUDIES

Assignment No. 1

Name: Aleem Hasan

Class: BBA 2K11 (A)

Q: "And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allah, and be not divided amongst
yourselves" [Surah al-Imran (3): 103]. Define this verse!

Ans: The first part of this verse relates to “the rope of Allah” which has been interpreted as being
The Holy Quran - the Book of guidance for the entire mankind. This is the Book that contains
everything a man needs to know. As mentioned in the Quran itself:

“Indeed this Qur’an guides to the path which is clearer and straighter than any
other.” (17:89)

The Glorious Quran- the last revealed Word from the Creator to the humankind- is the prime
source of every Muslim's faith and practice. It deals with all the subjects that concern us as
human beings: wisdom, doctrine, worship and law, but its basic theme is the relationship between
God and His creatures. At the same time it provides guidelines for a just society, proper human
conduct and an equitable economic system. Ultimately, the Holy Quran is the law of guidance, it
is a message of significant importance which has to be obeyed and followed by the entire
mankind.

The second part of this verse - “be not divided amongst yourselves"- relates to unity and
brotherhood amongst the Muslims. Allah SWT considers brotherhood and solidarity as important
attributes of believers. The Holy Quran mentions that all believers are brothers; they are the
people sharing the same feelings, striving for the same end, adhering to the same book and
struggling to achieve the same goal that has been set by our common Creator. The Glorious
Quran prohibits the formation of sects and divisions in Islam through this verse:

“Those who have divided their system and become sects, you (Muhammad) are not with
them in anything…” (6:159)
It is a shameful fact that Muslims today are not following the teachings of the Holy Quran and as
a result, they are distancing themselves from Allah and the blessings that He has bestowed upon
us. It was a common practice in the Prophet’s days to read the Holy Quran in any spare time
whereas we indulge ourselves in watching TV, playing games or going out with family or friends.
Had we followed the teachings of Allah in this Book of His (Quran), we would not have lagged
behind from the rest of the world in every walk of life, neither would we be the oppressed race nor
would we be in the dire situation as we are today. All these things are also because of one more
thing- disunity among the Ummah. Today, we acknowledge ourselves as Sunni, Shia’h, Hanafi,
Shafi, Maliki or Humbali rather than recognizing ourselves as Muslims- the followers of One and
Only Allah, His Messenger- Muhammad (pbuh) and His Book- the Holy Quran. Today, we are
overwhelmed by jealousy, envy, selfishness and ambition. The satan has set upon breaking the
unity among the believers by inculcating a feeling of competition amongst our own brothers. We
have been grabbed by delusions of grandeur and to develop an ambition to attain a particular
status in the society and in doing so, man does not even abstain from undoing his own brother.
As a result we have made this world divided by hate, mistrust and divisive opinion.

All of this has happened because we as Muslims have led astray from the teachings of the Holy
Quran- the rope stretched out by Allah for us to hold onto- and the Holy Prophet’s (pbuh) sunnah.
Following the teachings of the Holy Quran is extremely essential if we are to reclaim not only our
past pride and glory but would help us fall onto the path of righteousness and success. The Holy
Quran encompasses our life from start to finish since it contains the teachings that are helpful for
us from birth till death, more so till the Judgment Day and beyond. Reading and following the
teachings of the Holy Quran is essential if we are to break hold of satan’s tactics. Consequently, a
Believer should never let competition or dispute prevail among his brothers. Furthermore, he
should never arouse this feeling in others as well and rather be unpretentious, modest and self-
sacrificing as mentioned in the Holy Quran and taught by the teachings of the Prophet (pbuh).
Indeed, unless Believers remain as protectors of each other, oppression would prevail. Our
ultimate goal is to earn the pleasure of Allah and hence, competition never prevails in an
environment where the common goal is the good pleasure of Allah.

“Be not like those who are divided amongst themselves and fall into disputations after
receiving Clear Signs: For them is a dreadful penalty” (3: 105)

Are we not doing the same thing today by thinking that our biological features, geographical
location, financial status, or organizational ties, make us superior to others? Your financial status
does not gain you privileges in Islam. Some people hate the rich while others despise the poor.
Neither is tolerated in Isla. Rather, we must love for our brothers what we love for ourselves. As
instructed in the Holy Quran, we are to discern people by piety and not through any prejudice or
biasness. We are told not to mock, judge or hurt another because you think you are better than
the other.

“The Believers are nothing else than brothers (in Islamic religion). So make reconciliation
between your brothers, and fear Allah, that you may receive mercy.” (49:10)

The Quran guides us upon the “cultural awareness” and how to achieve true unity. It is left upon
us to follow what has been stated in the Holy Quran. If only all Muslims read the Qur’an with
understanding and adhere to its teachings, most of these differences would be solved, we could
be one united Muslim Ummah and surely we will be on the path of truth and success.
