The document discusses changes to UG-84 Edition from 2017 and mentions maximum thickness allowed for deposited weld metal.

The maximum thickness allowed for deposited weld metal by each process is ≤ 38mm.

't1', 't2' and 't3' refer to deposited weld metal thicknesses that are each ≤ 38mm.

Edition 2017 Changes

Notch In HAZ

• Prior to 2013 Edition, UG-84(g) (2) required notch to be in HAZ.

• Notch should cover as much HAZ as possible.

UG-84 Edition -2017 Changes

Notch in HAZ

• See another interpretation for multi processes.

• Please remember that ASME Section-IX has requirements.

• QW 200.2(b) requires that weld metal deposited using each set of variables
shall be included in the notch toughness specimens.

UG-84 Edition -2017 Changes

Notch in HAZ

• In 2013 Edition UG-84 was revised to specify location of HAZ impact test
specimens.

UG-84 Edition -2017 Changes

Notch in HAZ

• However, Code did not specify Weld and HAZ specimens requirements
when multiple welding processes are used for WPS Qualification.
• 2017 Edition specifies now requirements for Weld and HAZ impact test
specimens for multiple processes.
• This presentation will detail the specified requirements.
• This is not an official interpretation of the Code.

Section-IX Requirements

• QW-171.2 talks of acceptance criteria.

Section-IX Requirements

• QW-171.3 talks of Specimen removal and preparation requirements.

UG-84 Edition -2017 Changes

UG-84 (h) (3) Changes

• When procedure tests are made on material over 1 ½ inch (38mm) in thickness ,
the following heat-affected zone and weld metal three sets of impact
specimens are required.
• (-a) Heat affected zone specimens shall be as described in g(2) above.
• (-b) Two sets of impact specimens shall be removed from the weld with one set
located near {within 1/16 inch(1.5mm)} the surface of one side of the material
and one set taken as near as practical midway between the surface and center
of thickness of the opposite side and oriented as described in (g) (1) above.

Introduction of UG-84 (h)(5)

• (f) talks about subjecting Test plates to same heat treatment in actual
manufacture.

Thickness Limits

• Important thickness limits for Weld and HAZ

• For Weld ≤ 38mm and > 38mm
• For HAZ Single side ≤ 19mm, <38mm and ≥ 38mm
• For HAZ Double side ≤ 19mm and > 19mm

UG-84 Edition -2017 Changes

UG-84 Requirements

• For Single welding Process; Weld

• If base metal “t” > 11mm, use full size specimen. (Ref UG-84(c) (2) except
for materials with toughness >240J)
• If base metal “t” <11mm, use largest possible standard sub-size specimen
• For materials whose shape will not allow 10 by10mm specimen, use largest
possible standard sub-size specimen.
• If the maximum obtainable sub-size specimen has a width along the notch
less than 2.5mm, Impact test is not required.
• For “t” ≤ 38mm, Face of the specimen shall be within 1.5mm from the
surface of material.
• For “t” >38mm, additional set located approximately ¾ t from the weld
surface

UG-84 Edition -2017 Changes

UG-84 Requirements

• For Single welding Process; HAZ

• Refer Table UG-84.6 for approximate location where notch should fall

• Notch to be located at the distance specified from Weld/Root Surface

UG-84 Edition -2017 Changes

UG-84 Requirements

• For Single welding Process; HAZ

• Full size specimen if possible.
• If not, largest possible standard sub-size specimen
• If the maximum obtainable sub-size specimen has a width along the notch less
than 2.5mm, Impact test is not required.

UG-84 Edition -2017 Changes

UG-84 Requirements

• For Multiple welding Processes; Weld

• If weld metal deposited by a process “t” > 11mm, use full size specimen.
• If weld metal deposited by a process “t” <11mm, use largest possible standard
sub-size specimen
• If the maximum obtainable sub-size specimen has a width along the notch less
than 2.5mm, Impact test is not required.
• Face of the specimen shall be within 1.5mm from the surface of material for
each process when deposited weld metal thickness by the process is ≤ 38mm
• When deposited weld metal thickness by a single process “t” >38mm,
additional set located approximately ¾ t from the weld surface of that process
• In view of these, fairly accurate measurement of weld deposit by each process
will be required.
